I'm not really much of a cologne or perfume wearer. My mainstay is 4711 Eau de Cologne (actually from Cologne, Germany) that's been around since the late 1700s. It's a subtle, citrus-based fragrance with notes of (among a number of other things) sandalwood, rosemary, lavender, attar of roses, vetiver oil and cedar oil. A friend of mine used to wear it and I liked it so much I went out and bought a bottle. I splash some on pretty much every day.

Well, I've noticed in the past that when one of my graphic/web design clients is going out on the town and is all done up, she wears a perfume that's just absolutely heavenly. I finally asked her one day what she wears and she replied, "Chanel No. 5." Thereafter, whenever I'd catch a whiff of it from her I'd usually comment on how wonderful it was, saying recently, "That smells SO good that I'd wear it!"

So guess what she gave me for Christmas! Yep, a bottle of Chanel No. 5! And, yes, I will certainly wear it! But only for fancy occasions. I'll stick to 4711 for day-to-day good-smelling.

The key with Chanel No. 5 is to spray just the tiniest "poof" of it behind an ear or on a wrist so that an elusive, mysterious fragrance is just barely detectible. Some people wear way too much of it, drenching themselves in it, and it smells to high heavens. "Less is more." But then, that applies to pretty much all perfumes and colognes I guess.

By the way, does anyone recall the long-gone Bonwit Teller Department Store in New York City? They sold "Bonwit's Private Label Eau de Toilette" which another friend (long-ago dearly departed) used to wear. A few years ago I found a 1.5-oz. bottle at an estate sale. I bought it because its scent reminded me of my friend. I used it a couple of times and liked it but found it to be too heavy and cloying, so I stuck it away in a dresser drawer.

Oh, and then there's Zizanie, a woodsy, spicy cologne. I used to wear it back in the mid 1970s. I still have a bottle around here somewhere. If I spray a bit into the air it takes me right back to the discos -- dancing to ABBA, Donna Summer, The Bee Gees, KC and the Sunshine Band and Gloria Gaynor -- wearing tight, hip-hugger flare-leg slacks (waist size 28 thank you!) a wide leather belt, loud polyester shirts opened halfway down my chest, a puka shell necklace around my neck, platform shoes, a leather band cuff watch, and a big curly mop of hair.

Love 4711, for something so old-fashioned it never really dates, and it's truly unisex too. This also happens to my pick for day to day wear as well (I NEVER go without aftershave or cologne... to me it's like a wristwatch, I'd feel naked without it). Only downside it has no staying power, and wears off after an hour or two, but the whole point of this particular fragrance is that you can reapply it frequently throughout the day to refresh oneself.

Other than that, most of my favourites are old classics such as Davidoff Cool Water, Paco Rabanne and Givenchy Gentleman. As far as more modern fragrances go, Kenneth Cole Black is a recent discovery that I'm quite liking, as is Lacoste Green.

The only scent I absolutely cannot stand is Joop!, which makes me feel queasy to the pit of my stomach. Back in my dating days, catching a whiff of this on someone was always guaranteed to make my toes curl, killing off the whole evening before it even started. Instant turnoff.

Don't get me started

I love most scents, even from the "stinky" ones to the subtle ones. I use one or two squirts of Givenchy Gentleman, and some of the cheap (and we mean cheap) Dollar Tree, dollar store scents. I used to soak myself in it, but now I just use one or two puffs of the good stuff, five or six of the cheap knock off ones. Daddy gave Mom four Dana scents one year, she didn't really use them, but I got a whiff of 20 Carats, it was wonderful. Tabu, I love, but it is smothering when misused. Canoe and Ambush are similar. Mark II, some obscure item from the '60's, and my favorite, Leather by Avon. The scent never goes bad. I smelled it on a classmate in 6th Grade, and loved it ever since. I have NOS bottles in boxes, and a bottle of either after shave or the cologne in an unboxed bottle. Smell is a very powerful memory inducer, every time I smell Jean Nate, I think of our Aunt Teeny's house in Lynchburg, Virginia, the whole house had that subtle scent. She was a pip, everybody loved her.

I have one tiny bottle of 4711, I love it. Chanel No. 5 is pure classic, and class. Revlon Pub never goes bad, and smells incredible.

I won't leave the house without applying cologne!!

I generally am open to trying lots of different brands and fragrances (admittedly none of which are very expensive) but the only two that I stick by and can always rely on are both from Avon and are Wilderness and Musk

The former is a spray which is great for convenience as I can just quickly spray my neck and wrists before leaving the house (I know, that's probably not the "correct" technique!) and the latter is a lotion which I usually splash on after a bath or a shower.

I'm not sure if you can get them in America (in fact, I doubt it) but here are links to them on Amazon in case anybody is interested:

I was just thinking, in addition to colognes/after shaves, does anybody have a favourite deodorant/anti-perspirant?  I am a big big fan of Right Guard Fresh 48H.

I've tried a lot of other brands but I just find RG to be very refreshing and reassuring and most importantly it doesn't irritate my skin when worn every day as a lot of other brands did.

cologne...

I love cologne! I would hate to leave the house without putting on a least one spritz of it

I usually wear Versace Man Eau Fraiche but this Christmas I got Gucci Guilty Pour Homme  so that'll be the one I wear now. I love the smell of it! Versace actually gave me a headache so I stopped wearing for a bit.

My deodorant of choice is Old Spice High Endurance Pure sport. Smells fine, no odor, no rash. Oh Charles, you had to bring up the Disco period of life! Memories flood.

I also use Old Spice High Endurance but I like the "Fresh" variety. Smells good, non-irritating as Suckolux pointed out, and does a great job.

For me, the daily grab is either Axe "Dark Temptation", Abercrombie & Fitch "Fierce", or American Eagle "Legend".

For special occasions, I pull out a wonderful scent called "Chrome United" that I bought in New York City at Saks Fifth Avenue about a year and a half ago.

My all time favorite scent so far, and one I have gotten tons of complements on is Aeropostale's Benton. It is fresh, but not terribly strong; I can go from just a spritz to drenching myself in it, and it smells nice either way, and never overpowering. I also like Axe Dark Temptation, but applied very lightly, as it's strong. I got a bottle of Adidas Moves for Christmas and it is nice enough, but seems more like something a teenager would wear; and VERY strong. I haven't used more than two sprays at one time and it's plenty. My one and only deodorant of choice is Dove Men + care, as it has become the only one that doesn't make me break out. Only the Antipirspirant though, the regular deodorant causes a nasty rash. Any of the available scents have worked for me, but I seem to have settled on the Cool Silver scent, which is very light.
