I'm not really much of a cologne or perfume wearer. My mainstay is 4711 Eau de Cologne (actually from Cologne, Germany) that's been around since the late 1700s. It's a subtle, citrus-based fragrance with notes of (among a number of other things) sandalwood, rosemary, lavender, attar of roses, vetiver oil and cedar oil. A friend of mine used to wear it and I liked it so much I went out and bought a bottle. I splash some on pretty much every day.
Well, I've noticed in the past that when one of my graphic/web design clients is going out on the town and is all done up, she wears a perfume that's just absolutely heavenly. I finally asked her one day what she wears and she replied, "Chanel No. 5." Thereafter, whenever I'd catch a whiff of it from her I'd usually comment on how wonderful it was, saying recently, "That smells SO good that I'd wear it!"
So guess what she gave me for Christmas! Yep, a bottle of Chanel No. 5! And, yes, I will certainly wear it! But only for fancy occasions. I'll stick to 4711 for day-to-day good-smelling.
The key with Chanel No. 5 is to spray just the tiniest "poof" of it behind an ear or on a wrist so that an elusive, mysterious fragrance is just barely detectible. Some people wear way too much of it, drenching themselves in it, and it smells to high heavens. "Less is more." But then, that applies to pretty much all perfumes and colognes I guess.
By the way, does anyone recall the long-gone Bonwit Teller Department Store in New York City? They sold "Bonwit's Private Label Eau de Toilette" which another friend (long-ago dearly departed) used to wear. A few years ago I found a 1.5-oz. bottle at an estate sale. I bought it because its scent reminded me of my friend. I used it a couple of times and liked it but found it to be too heavy and cloying, so I stuck it away in a dresser drawer.
Oh, and then there's Zizanie, a woodsy, spicy cologne. I used to wear it back in the mid 1970s. I still have a bottle around here somewhere. If I spray a bit into the air it takes me right back to the discos -- dancing to ABBA, Donna Summer, The Bee Gees, KC and the Sunshine Band and Gloria Gaynor -- wearing tight, hip-hugger flare-leg slacks (waist size 28 thank you!) a wide leather belt, loud polyester shirts opened halfway down my chest, a puka shell necklace around my neck, platform shoes, a leather band cuff watch, and a big curly mop of hair.
