Singer Silver Glide Canister with Retractable Hose

I think if I were to start a vintage collection, the first non-Eureka vacuum I would hunt for is a rare Singer canister that actually retracted its hose with the push of a button. Not sure if this cleaner was a Golden Glide or a Silver Glide or a Magic Glide...but I know it existed at some point.

Not that I have room or money to spare now, but I am curious if any collectors actually have one of these unique vacuum cleaners from the 1960's. Anyone?

I've never heard of a vacuum cleaner with a retractable hose. I'm not saying they ever existed, just that I've never seen one.


 


I remember a canister machine, a Sunbeam I think, that was circular-shaped and the hose could be tucked in around the perimeter of the motor housing but it wasn't retractable.

It was an Eureka that had the cannister where the hose could be tucked around. The pic is from the thread about Dysonman's big vacuum sale.

There definitely was a Singer "Glide" canister that had a hose that retracted automatically with the push of a button, just like a cord reel. It was Singer's answer to Hoover's Portable and Eureka's Crown Princess - both of which allowed the user to manually store the hose inside the cleaner.

It does exist!

I once found one,and only one,on the porch at a thrift store in less than perfect condition.I sold it as is on EBay.
It had no power nozzle.But then had every deluxe feature including---hose reel--cord reel--check bag light--deluxe attachments(similar to Eureka)--telescopic wand--removable tool caddy--etc.It used different bags with bag door on bottom.The hose had a valve that would let it suck or blow without moving.
The hose would be the first to fail with extra stress as it did on this one.

Thanks Jimmy and Phillip! It seems like such a rare, yet wonderful, cleaner design - however faulty - and so indeed, this is my Holy Grail. Though finding an exact replica of my childhood blue Eureka Super Automatic 260 upright is the other vacuum I have yet to see: with the exact printing on the blue bag that is so rare to find.

Sure keeps me busy surfing the net! . If anyone has pics of the Singer with retractable hose, please post! Thanks guys!!!

I remember seeing one with the retractable hose years back. There was also a version of the Eureka Crown Princess with white hose and parts under the Singer name as well.

I give you a brief factual description of actual experience.I could add that I have extra genuine bags,have parts diagram in a box somewhere,that the styling is similar to Golden/Silver Glide but larger to hold hose,hose/cord reel buttons are foot pedals,etc.
I would welcome any other comments or pictures.
I am not sure if Tom has this very rare vac in the museum.I would welcome his always informative comments on possible repairs or finds.
I am sure that I have almost all vacs in the museum(but not the museum building)and a few that Tom may not have.Most of these would be available within the limitation of having less time for vacs as I am starting a bookstore with 1000s of volumes in a new location(another long time interest).

It's a Singer model C-10. It's VERY heavy. I'll get it out of the store room during the Vacuum Palooza at the end of this week, and take a pic before someone buys it.

If I could ever make it over to TN, I'd gladly throw money at you for a rare machine or 2. You all are so lucky to have a machine like this within reach. Texas is such a throwaway state. People just don't keep things in my part of the country. One has to go way out of their way to a small remote town to find anything like this. Most of the big city vac shops in Texas have done away with their oldies.

Singer C 10

My Grandmother had a C-10 Golden Glide. It had a retractable hose that wasn't very long and didn't detach from the vacuum. To get to the bag there was a door at the bottom of the vacuum. No power nozzle just suction only. I'm thinking the wand was telescopic but I'm not sure of that. I do remember white plastic at the center connection of the wands. The top of the vacuum was black where the hose was located. I've been looking for one forever. You can find bags for it on ebay. There will be a picture of the vacuum on the packaging. I don't know whatever happened to that vacuum. It replaced an Airway 66 but was replaced by a Eureka Power team.

My grandmother had a Silver Glide from the 70s that was beige/yellow with an avocado bag door on top but it did not have a retractable hose that I remember. I saw the manual too and it showed other models but I don't recall any having that, this must have been an earlier version.

And with the Constellation, you could kind of roll the hose around the base to store it like the round Eureka and Sunbeam.

Thank you for those details, Martin! I kind of thought the hose might not be very long in order for it to fit inside the unit like the Hoover Portable.

Would be a nice feature for someone like Miele or Sebo to try to bring back to market again - hopefully with better success and more reliable.

Found a few pictures of a C10 that was on an ebay auction a few years back. It isnt complete but it gives the general idea of how it worked.
