Just thought I'd share this.

I found this one in the garbage one day, the 2 attachments missing and the cord cut off. The first thing I think is that it's clogged and someone thought it was broken. My friend has a very similar Shark, and that has a screen cone thing in the dust cup that gets clogged all the time, and it's VERY difficult to clean. I figured that was it.

First thing, I cut up the nub of wire left, powered it up and it was real strong. I open up everything on it - which was pleasantly easy, all clog points are quick disconnects. No clogs. The screen cone was clean, and it's different from my buddy's, it's removable and easy to clean. The filters were near spotless.

So literally nothing was wrong with this thing, not even dirty filters. I ordered a cheap cord from ebay, slam, bam, thank you ma'am. I didn't really need or want this cleaner, but I've used it in my room for a couple months now with no issues.

Anyway, I find the stickers hilarious. Have a look at the second pic.

Oh damn, you beat me to posting the joke! I seen that too when I got my store salvage Shark NV60 back in December. I got a laugh out of that too. It's companies like Shark with their "needs no maintenance!" "never loses suction" hype that makes people think they can run a vacuum until it's clogged or the belt snaps, then they chuck it in the bin and buy another and start the cycle over again.

My Shark has an issue with the swivel part, it needs some plastic grease and to re-situate the switch (jams), but I can't seem to figure out how to separate the two halves where the switch is. The screwdriver started digging into the plastic so I didn't go any farther. The model I have is too new to have parts for it so I can;t just put a new head on it. I'll probably post photos of it eventually this week.

I do like the blue color of your model though, that looks really nice.

I bought the Orange color scheme Shark NV480 on clearance for $50 bucks and it’s part of my mini Shark collection. I really like your Blue colors and blues are my favorite.

I had the same “LOL” moment too when reading the labels.. too funny!

Congrats on saving (any) vacuum from the dumpster.. I see a vacuum in the trash and I cringe as I always have the urge to “Save” the poor thing from the garbage dump!

I also have a habit of going to the Good Will store and the V.O.A. Looking for poor, abused or neglected vacuum cleaners. I buy them, clean them inside and out, replace parts, filters, etc where I can.. then I take them back and re-donate them clean and refurbished.. ready for a new home!

I just feel badly as I’m new to Vacuumland but see a LOT of strong negative opinions on Shark in general. I understand they are the economy coupe to the luxury vehicles in the Sebo, Miele, Kirby, Any Tacony brand.. but they are still vacuum cleaners and still should be allowed the same respect as all the other brands of Vacuums. Dislike anything you want, I agree you’re allowed your opinions of ANY vacuum.. but I wish some of the more vocal “Shark Haters” would at least stop saying every Shark belongs in the trash can!

I’m NOT out to alienate or anger any member here.. I’m simply sharing my Love for every single vacuum ever made.. vacuum cleaners have and always will have a special place in my heart... it’s obvious I Love them all as my collection is over 250 Vacuums my last count, and I don’t discriminate against any brand.

I hope we can all see this is a fun blog to share vacuum stories, ask advice and show off our latest additions. I’ve just been compelled until now, to just Not share anything about my Shark Vacuums because I feel bad when someone tears me down or says I’m an idiot for “wasting money on a Shark”.

Shark isn’t even my favorite brand, but I have a respect for all Vacuums.. strengths and weaknesses.. nobody is perfect and no vacuum is perfect for every single consumers needs.

Sorry for the Soap Box speech, I just wanted to share with everyone on this website my Love and respect for ALL of you and ALL of your vacuum brands! Everyone have a great day and thanks for all those who’ve welcomed me to Vacuumland!

It's not the size of the motor that matters, it's how the motor is used to make suction. Use a Shark and you will see that they can really pull the fine dirt out of the nap. I always use my Shark after the Kirby and it will still be pulling dirt out of the carpet.

A Dyson can have a huge 1,000 watt motor and make as much noise as a table saw, but it picks up terribly because their suction system is crap.

HonestJoe68 -> I'm new here too. You know... if you fix vacs and give them away, you're a saint. Honestly, I'd probably be doing something like that if I actually had free time. And I bet people give you crap about that. Personally, I wouldn't give them back to the thrift shops for them to make money off of my hard work, but I suppose GoodWill is at least somewhat of a charity, so there's that. (You could always give them away for free on craigslist.)

I'm really not much of a vacuum guy, but the only strong opinions I have about Sharks so far is that stupid dust cup cone screen filter thing on my buddy's Shark (I think Rotator). It's in a little cubby hole and it's MOLDED to the dust cup. You need a stiff bristle tooth brush to get in there and clean it, ridiculous design flaw. On my Shark, that cone just sits there, easily removable, so just take it out, smack the dust off of it, done. Like I said though, I really liked that all the hose connections are super easy to remove.

BlackHeart -> I did, actually! To change the cord, you literally have to knock the WHOLE thing down. But I'm not complaining, it was actually really easy. There was only one screw that you need a longer screwdriver than normal, and all the screws are identical - a nice touch. I did find it interesting that the motor is wrapped in a sound(?) insulation blanket. It might make it a bit quieter, but it seems like a really easy way to heat up the motor. Then again, is uses the suction air to cool itself, so...

HuskyVacs again -> Size of the boat, motion in the ocean, etc.

Yeah this site runs on old hardware so you just have to improvise for us modern folks used to other newer forums.

I just use the subject drift to put the "@ (person im replying to)". If replying to multiple people ill just have the "@ (person name here)" with a divider between people. I figure that works out alright enough. It's just what I do.

Also I believe the foam is just there for vibration isolation, on my SwivelPro that's what it is for anyway.

Also PS: don't put any type of detergent on the yellow foam filter if you want to wash it. I did that because mine smelled bad from the previous owner (yay florida swamps) and the orange Downy I used before chucking it in the washer on a gentle rinse stained the foam where the detergent landed.

That's a great collection of Sharks you have! I like the colors they use, really pretty and some are a bit unique you never see other companies use. My local Menards still has that green one for sale for nearly $200! It's a 2 or 3 year old model I think.

Hello everybody!

Thanks guys! Yes I agree MadMan and I do sometimes give them away too. I know our local area goodwill and VOA mark them down low for those who can’t afford it and our “local ladies” are good at marking prices fair. I’ve probably given away 50 to 60 Vacuums so far, some new I gave to friends having a rough time or younger friends moving into their first apartment and I just gave my best friends 80 year old grandma a brand new Oreck Axis and she almost cried.. telling me as she hugged me.. I can do my own vacuuming again! So adorable, she’s like my second grandma. (I don’t have her permission to use the pic of her vacuuming with her new Oreck, so I’ll add the pic of it in her kitchen to surprise her when she got home) I also gave my next door neighbor three new vacuums, from my collection, because her husband always plows the snow from my driveway. I find it therapeutic to work on vacuum cleaners so it’s also beneficial to me too. I’m most relaxed and happy when working on, cleaning up or using my Vacuums! Lol bit of an oddball I am!

Thanks for the compliment HuskyVacs! I just added to my Shark Family while picking up paper towels at Sam’s Club and I bought a brand new NV835 Shark Powered Lift Away XL Duo Clean! They got me with the added bonus tools and an extra $50 bucks off the $229.98 price.. so for a current and nicely equipped XL it was $179.98. It’s in the Dark Metallic Blue and Deep Metallic Orange colors! I Love it and it’s not even out of the box yet.. but I will add pics later.

Thanks everybody for advice and comments and sharing! I couldn’t resist adding a few pics of my Kirby Sentria II as well... these pics are what it looked like right after picking it up. The previous owner took excellent care of it and had a brand new genuine Kirby bag in it and not one piece of fuzz or hair in the brushroll! I messaged a thank you to her today, such a nice lady.

Use a Shark?

I've owned two of their full sized vacuums, one of the older stick vacs, and a few variations of the handhelds. I've had experience both as an owner and on the repair bench. I recently ran a test to see how rapidly they lose flow. I'm not a fan.

As for the motor. The size of it can definitely make a difference, at the same rpm a machine with a larger fan will have a greater speed at the edge of the fan which should result in greater flow. A motor as small as the one in the rocket should be in a stick vacuum not in a machine marketed as a full sized upright.

@honestjoe68 - there's really nothing odd about finding peace/joy fixing stuff. I'm the same way, but with fixing anything in general. Of course fixing cars is my real job so that can get tiring sometimes, especially when you see the same problem over and over again, and it boils down to either the customer's stupidity or the engineer's stupidity.

My mother's Shark UV795 has started to have motor problems due to the damn thing tipping over every time you try to use the hose. It also has very poor airflow, which is a fail in my book. I hope it conks out soon.
