I've been using my Hoover 160 with its shakeout bag only since I got it - previously I've fitted paper bags inside shakeout bag cleaners for the sake of convenience, but it spoils the look of the bag when not in use.

One thing that concerns me is the amount of dirt that stays stuck inside the bag after emptying. I did wash the bag out as it stunk quite frankly, but even when emptying as per Hoover's instructions, a lot of dust and particularly big lumps of cat hair stays stuck inside, meaning that I end up vacuuming it out with another machine.

Could static from the washing be causing this? I had thought of spraying the inside with diluted fabric conditioner, but don't want to bother if it'll be ineffective.

Has anyone found an effective way to make these bags easier to empty?

I don't think it's static, because I wouldn't have thought a non-synthetic fabric would generate/store/conduct any. I think it's mainly hair, which gets stuck in the weave, and provides an 'anchor' which other dirt then sticks to.

I think with shakeout bags, you either have to commit to keeping them clean, by putting a paper bag inside each time, or else just use them as they were originally intended: after each use, shake them out, rub the inside against itself (so the fluff comes off and falls out in little sausages!), and occasionally brush or vacuum it out.

Your 160 bag being so rare, I'd highly recommend the former!
