We were awakened by an earthquake at around 6:30 this morning. It wasn't a huge one; nothing fell or toppled over. It was just a big-enough jolt to wake us up, including the dogs who jumped up with a start.

I heard on the news that it was a 4.7-magnitude quake with the epicenter in Westwood which is about 8 miles away. The concern is always "Will there be a bigger one" but I haven't even felt any aftershocks, so I hope that was the end of it!

The 1994 Northridge quake was a horror I hope I never again live through. It literally felt like some kind of giant monster had our building in its hands and was violently shaking it up and down. And it kept on going and going for what seemed like an eternity, but actually was only about 20 seconds. I've never been more scared in my life.

Check out this video clip from a live broadcast of the news this morning -- this is pretty funny to watch, but they did exactly the right thing.

Then there was the time an earthquake struck during a taping of "Judge Judy." She ducked underneath her table -- you can just see the top of her head sticking up from the bottom of the video frame.
