Seating New Brushes

Anyone have a good method for seating new brushes on Electrolux and Hoover Convertibles? On Kirbys, it is very easy as you have good access to the commutator. On these others, it appears a bit more tricky....

i just no-load run them for a few minutes after cleaning the commutator with a pink eraser.

There's no way to get at the commutator while the machine's running so the only way to seat the brushes on a Convertible is to just let them run in.

At electrolux we always used a seating stone on the commutator while the motor was running at half speed then let it continue running at half speed for about a half hour (wire two motors in series to give half speed)

Seating-matching and breaking in new brushes to a motors communtator.Used to do this while repairing power tools-used the white seating stones-for the most part tool motors were easily accessed.You would use the stone on each brush side of the motor-but BREIFLY-the stone is ABRASIVE and will rapidly wear the brush and communtator if used too long.erasers aren't really good-the rubber contains sulphur that can damage copper.If you don't have the seating stone-stick just let the motor run no load for several minutes-usually about 10min.

Seating Stones

We use the white seating stones as well, and break them in for 30 mins. But due to the dust it creates, and the sticks wear down quickly, I was thinking about trying a commutator resurfacer instead. Like in the link below. Anyone try one of these?

Break in

I have run the motors at half speed and or just seated them in with a Brush stone at Full Speed.

(1) My take on this is just use a brush stone,
(2) you may have to try seating them in a few times untill arcing disappers
(3) if there is any excessive arcing after that, this usually indicates a worn Armature.

Only big problems I have run into is from over-tightening the fan nut as this can put extra load on the bearings and cuase over-heating.
Especially critical on Uprite Vacuums as the Shaft will get hot and eventually melt the Rubber belt.

Having said that Half Speed or Full Speed..........I don't think it has any bearing on a proper break in.

Seating Stones

Yes sarasvacshack that is basically the Stone that I have used for the last 10 years. They last a long time...........I paid $10.00 for it back then.
