Seating Carbon Brushes

If their brand new then possibly. Does it spark much in use?

I bought a set of comm cleaning sticks from the US a few years ago to fix a compact motor that was giving me great and it worked well. Left the motor in the machine to do it so it was secure so was a bit of a faff but on a convertible there should be loads of room.

Cleaning the comm with wire wool prior to reassembly helps too

A few years ago I purchased a set of brushes to replace a worn out set on my model 541, and although not a convertible, same concept should apply. My friend recommended using a carbon seating stone if you felt brave enough to stick that thing in the motor and it running at several thousand rpm, or you could clean the armature with steel wool as beko suggested above, use a variac (or make one, there are directions on the internet) to run the motor at half speed (approx 55 to 60 volts) for half an hour. That should properly seat the brushes on your motor. If you replaced the brushes without properly seating them and run it at full speed, I imagine you will end up with excessive sparking which would produce more heat, and give off that "ozone" smell. Hope this helps you out.

How come we never heard of you going to visit sweeper central, Last I knew you were still waiting to go and visit him due to your "busy schedule" could it be Dan that you have never really been to the store that you " speak of so much"? Not to be an ass or anything and hijack the thread but honestly you take pictures of everything! I am surprised you forgot your Top of the line camera for that trip, or could it be that you my friend were never there!

Know what?! That YOU were NEVER there? Dan we all aren't stupid like you think we are. Some are just smarter than others and some can also see right through others just like I can see through you! Oh and which buddy are you referring about? I do have SEVERAL.

With all respect intended guys, please let's not argue. We're all here for the love of our hobby. Let's get along and enjoy it! It's so much more fun that way! Have a happy Easter everyone!
