Savvy?

I bought a Hoover Savvy at a local thriftstore for $6.99. It appeared someone vacuumed a wet area and the plastic tubes leading to the brushes were clogged. I cleaned it up and gave it whirl. I am very surprised at how much quieter it is than a Windtunnel. I have never pushed any vacuum across my rug that lifted the nap better than this. On line I have read dismal reviews mostly attributed to the brush drive. If I treat it well and keep the height adjust on a correct setting I hope to avoid melted brushes. All that said, I see that the Savvy comes as bagged/bagless. In viewing the Hoover web site and in downloading a manual there is no mention of the conversion or attachment to use the machine with a bag. Can one of you on the inside track let me know what I need to get or how it works.

I remember when the Savvy first came out i thought it was the coolest thing ever! Doesn't it have two brush rolls? I don't know how you put the bag in, but it takes a Y bag.

Its a two brush system rolling in opposite directions, which is actually 4 rolls because the brushes come in pairs for each side. The brushes are powered by a separate electric motor which runs a toothed belt like the Electrolux uses on the Power Nozzle

I've had a Savvy for about 5 or 6 years and I have had good luck with it, despite the very negative reviews about durability that I also have seen. Mine has the original set up with the two brushrolls, but they eventually changed it to the standard one-brushroll because they had tons of problems with the dual brushrolls. Depending on the hight and plushness of your carpet, the two brushroll arrangement is very hard to push. Since I got new carpet last year, I can't use it on that, but I do still use it upstairs on berber and it does well. I agree with the nap lifting comment.

As to the question on the bag, there is an additional canister that fits where the dirt container / filter canister that you have goes. The two canisters are interchangeable. Not sure where to suggest that you look for one as Im not sure if this model is stll made. I found that mine always worked better with the bag. I always thought this had great tool suction.

The early WindTunnel V2 machines had two (or four small ones) brushrolls but they were discontinued on later models. I think they failed a lot. I didn't like them because they were VERY loud and the machine was hard to push because the brushrolls were fighting each other. At the same time these first came out, Kenmore had a mint green bagless upright that also had dual brushrolls that worked much better.

Those V2 and Savvys were pretty heavy as I remember. I see them in the thrift shops all the time. To make it a bagged machine, the machine acutally came with an auxilary chamber that looked JUST like the bagless chamber but had a fitting for a Y bag instead of a filter. I've heard it was hard to tell when it was full and hard to change too, but it must be nice to have the flexability. Before it came out, I wished that SOME manufacturer would give the option to let a machine be converted from bagged to bagless. Sorry it was manifested in this thing but at least someone did it! I wish they had made a self propelled verison of these!

bagless to bagged hmm lol
I have converted a eureka whirlwind to bagged by taking out the seperation system and dirt container and placing a hard cover from a eureka victory opn the front sincethe machines were practically the same. and the results were phenominal I wound up getting 5x the power with the standard AA bag rather than the bagless system

A sucker born every minute

I like to vacuum and enjoy comparing all the brands. I'm most comfortable with a canister but it seemed to me the power nozzle has a tendency to float. I have tried balancing a sack of flour on the nozzle and it seemed to me it picked up the nap a bit more. In 2002, we lived in a condo with 8 floors that needed daily vacuuming. I've had 5 surgeries and a brittle spine so the Eureka we used was a killer. I bought my first WindTunnel and was amazed at how much it picked up. I tried it at home and was equally amazed at it's ability to groom the rug. I work all the second hand stores and if any vacuum shows up that is a current model I bring it home for a spin and then gift it forward. The Savvy is quieter than my WindTunnel and does a superior job of lifting the nap. There is nothing in the chamber as far as dirt or fuzz. My carpet will a be year old on August 17th (old carpet under the Electrolux image) and I faithfully vacuum it everyday and more if I make a mess. Its a frieze but thicker than I would have chosen, making it more like the shag carpets of the 70's.
Thank you for your help and the link to ebay. I typed Savvy in the search line but the cannister didn't come up. Its odd they don't give it any mention in the owners manual.

Question

Nice model G there. I have the same setup, down to the beige PN with the turquoise elbow. What is the brush...a window blind brush, or a library brush? Is it made by Electrolux?

Brush Off

It is a brush designed especially for cleaning window blinds without bending or sucking them up the attachment. I use the Model G with an after market electric hose to increase suction, a newer power nozzle and genuine floor and upholstry tools. The vintage hose, wrapper and Power Nozzle are put away to preserve them.

A very nice Savvy came on Craigs for $35.00. The lady is older and can't push it. She bought an Oreck to replace it.
