It was sticking out of a skip next door .I could only see the handle so wasn't quite sure what was on the end of it [junior or a senior or maybe a floor polisher ]till i got it out anyway decisions .Is it too far gone [keep for spares] or is there still enough of it to do a refurb .I decided to do the latter so its getting a nut and bolt strip and rebuild .hear is a few pics of the strip down

pics.No 6 is one of the front wheel spindles .45 years repairing vacuum cleaners in that time i must have done hundreds of these but i have never come across this before.By the state of the carbon brushes i just got to it in time

more.All parts washed ready for respraying .Commutator cleaned with some polish [i have read some of the horror stories on here of people going at them with sandpaper .This is one place you dont want anything abrasive least of all sandpaper. Thats it for now guys will do a little more through the week

Nice find!

I use sandpaper on commutators. Oh, the horror! Like 500+ grit usually, even then only if it's pretty bad. Then you just blow it off when you're done. I don't get this ridiculous phobia of using sandpaper. What do you think a seating stone is? It's an abrasive. For that matter, what do you think polish is? Actually using polish sounds much worse, because that's leaving a greasy film on it that you will have to wash off.

652SC From maybe the early 7os. It may look like its had a hard life but remember it well over 40 years old [if you could see what the last 40 years has done to me you would know what i mean] and its probably been hoovering away all that time doing just what it was built to do with the least amount of maintenance.[A new belt now and then periodic bag change when it burst because it was completely full .The bulb at the front blows never mind its not important.After a few years the flex splits wrap some tape round it .the zip breaks on the bag a couple of safety pins will do the job and before you know whats happening its 2020 the owner is getting old but the Hoover is still cleaning even though its not looking so good .then the owner dies and family decide that no one wants the old hoover so it chucked in the skip along with the rest of its deceased owners life.Then i came along just at the right time .When the machine is finished my 84 year old mum wants it because in the last 10 years she has had countless plastic shit vacs that are neither use nor ornament [her words not mine ]and now she wants a real vacuum again like she had years ago

and will no doubt last another's lifetime after you fix a few things! They have always been called "the most abused appliance in the house."The younger generations are being groomed to think of just about everything as disposable and brand loyalty is a thing of the past. The years are just falling away from that machine.

did a little

more today.Rebuilt the motor and put the handle bale back on furniture guard and Hoover logo. note the new brushes next to the old ones.New flex fitted .I could only get three core so rather than just cut the earth off i have attached it to the main body of the machine.refurbished brush roll back in the machine along with a nice new belt.Just waiting for some new front wheel spindles to arrive and i can get the front wheels on

along with a new bellows.Bit of patching on the 60 year old Singer.Just need to work a little magic on the [worse for wear]hood

Just about finished with this .All it needs is a bulb .Its by no means perfect but its usable and will live a little longer .50 years old but it can still lift a carpet up off the floor

very nice refurbishing job. That is what a good vacuum cleaner can do. Pick up the carpet or rug up off the floor and give it a good vibrating and cleaning.
