I was painting at a new house on Monday and just as the owner was leaving for work she said, "If you want to use that old vacuum to clean up saw dust you can, if its in your way, throw it in the dumpster cause thats where its going, the suction is terrible".
I threw it out, right into the trunk of my car. The poor thing was just packed with drywall dust. You couldn't move it without dust coming out the hose.

Saved a Lux.

After a good scrub and polish. This must have been something coming new out of the box. I love the colour, this is my new favourite vacuum.

Saved a Lux.

The only tools it came with were the floor tool and two pipes.
The power head I have from the Ambassador. The blue and yellow look quite nice.
Thanks to Dave in Stratford, I have the dusting brush to ride on top. I can't believe how heavy this machine is. It weighs 20 pounds, the Ambassador weighs 12 and is easier to carry.
A couple of questions. How old is this machine? The model number is 1401. Second, the carpet selector is really hard to move, would it be ok to spray some WD40 in there?, Finally, what does shifting it from corse dirt to fine dirt do? Does the motor run faster?

Keep the door closed. Then the air will be diffused through the slots in the top. Great job cleaning that SuperJ up! It does look brand new! That's not a carpet selector....it's the automatic control when the machine shuts off from a full bag. An easy way to figure when the motor will shut off, and the front cover will open is by counting the number of bands that show in the little window. One band = 10% air flow restriction - through 6 bands = 60% air flow restriction. When the machine reaches the predetermined point by the setting on the control, then the cover will open and the motor will shut off! Cool huh? Don't put WD-40 down there. Sometimes they are hard to move, if it needs to be cleaned, you would have to disassemble the front cover to get to the valve. That might help, but they were kinda hard to move even when new.

Great machine!

What year:
1976-1978 Vintage, give or take.

Selecting coarse to fine dirt: This adjusts the automatic shut off. How much airflow do you want to drop off before the machine shuts itself off. If you set it on coarse dirt, it will shut off sooner than if you set it on fine dirt. ie. new bag has 100cfm, coarse would shut down at 75 cfm, fine would shut off at 50 cfm

Carpet selector hard to move?? Do you mean on the floor tool??

You'd be amazed at the suction/airflow either of these two machines have with a newer style vinyl hose. That old gold braided hose probably leaks quite badly

Really lovely save there, Brian

Yes, yes, yes to everything Ricky and Vernon said - they beat me to it. :-)

Say, we could gang your Super J with my Super J in tandem or parallel and have a Super Duper J-off to measure the inches of...wait for it...suction level. Sorry, to good to pass up under flying fingers speed typing...

What I really am trying to say is, I wonder what the vacuum Tester levels would be in either case, in an experimental quest for a competition level Monster J.

Dave, back to work...

Got to love a vacuum that lights up and tells you what to do!
Just took the Lux out on her maiden voyage vacuum. Wow this thing SUCKS!, in a good way. The suction is a lot better than the Ambassador's, its hose is done. I'm just as giddy as a widow with this vacuum!
Off to do the rest of the house.

Just noticing from your picture, two things. The cover should have opened when the bag light came on. Two, is your "dirt selector loose? In other words does it flop around? If so, there's a little protrusion at the end closer to the center of the machine that may be broken and might be what's making it difficult to turn. The setting you've got it at in the picture - the cover will pop sooner then with a higher number. Also, if the hose is deteriorated inside and is forming sort of a clog, the cover won't open. The machine just thinks you sucked up a sock. While it's running, pull the hose off and determine if the motor slows down quite a bit, and there is a rush of air-flow. I think you would be well to get a new hose anyway.

But NEVER toss out a vinyl woven hose, Brian (unless it's absolutely shredded in the middle and split open like an snake caught in Clint Eastwood's crosshairs). We can latex re-line it back like new again.
