I got my Sanitaire SC887B two years ago for a Christmas present. Don't get me wrong I love that machine and I always will, but the motor sounds different than older sanitaires that I've heard. I know the motor is not like an original metal motor, but can anyone tell me why Sanitaire doesn't give their vacuums the metal motor any more?

I bought

.........a five year old ZC880 upright early last December as I had so many bags from somewhere or the other. I would describe it as rather like a conventional dirty fan cleaner, late hoover commercial senior type,in red plastic. Its 700 watts and has a 'dial' type of height adjustment. Quite a few of the features are cheap, the power of the machine is to high for the plastic body and no matter how you adjust the wheel height its either to low or to high from the carpet. Machine in top condition, but disapointing!!

We bought a Sanitaire sc684 for our church in 2011, and I used it heavily for a year. While it does sound a bit different than older versions, I was extremely happy with the performance. I have not found another vacuum to this day that deep cleaned as well as that machine, and the only maintenance it needed was new belts and one set of brush strips. I pretty much used it as a garbage disposal, whatever was on the floor went up, and never damaged anything. It was still working perfectly when I left, and am sure it still is. I wouldn't say the new style motor is bad, just different.

PoconoVacMan- thanks for helping me understand the differences better, even though there aren't much. I never owned a Sanitair with a metal motor, so I wasn't sure if there was any performance difference. I guess now the only difference is the sound.

Those Sanitaires deep clean well beccause...

most of them come with either a vibra groomer one ot two. Also, its a dirty fan machine, so the big fan will help lift ouut that dirt and grit. Also, the sc684 is a nice machine!

There really aren't that many differences besides logo design, current use of ABS hoods on the lower tier models as opposed to painted metal, and using a redesigned motor.

As Dustin and I both stated above, the current motor, while having a different sound, is still just as powerful and long lasting as the old style.

Again, the only real differences between those 80s models besides half an amp in motor power, are purely cosmetic.

Good to know...

I've head from many people that the old motors were better. I'm glad that they were wrong. I guess I'm going to keep my original motor I stead of replacing it with an older one. Thanks for the info!:)
