Here's an interesting question for the citizens of Vacuumland:

In the 1990's, Sharp uprights were rated as very good performers by Consumer Reports. They were known for their really low noise levels and smart positioning of the cord hooks high up on the units. Why did Sharp stop selling vacs in North America? Any ideas out there?

Same for Korea's Samsung. Their power nozzle canisters were rated really well by Consumer Reports and the design of these units was really kewl. I think PeteK has one (or is it aeolianDave?). They were in the stores for a few years, and now they are nowhere to be found. Zilch. Klum. Not one. Why? What happened to them?

As far as I am aware, Sharp got out of the vacuum business altogether. Sanyo is apparently getting out of it, as well...

Samsung vacuums are still available in Canada. They are distributed through Hibbert Wholesale for sale to independant vacuum stores...

See the following link for their current product line.

Samsung vacuums in the UK

My Mum had the Samsung SU2920 upright for a while until my brother blew it up. Not a bad performing machine at all but messy with the filters. They usually needed cleaning once a month (an improvement on cleaning filters after every use at least) to maintain performance. It had a good brushroll and a nice long hose and wasn't too heavy either.

Hi Scott.....that's very interesting....

These Samsung vacs are still available in Canada, but not in the USA. That seems so strange, considering that these machines run on 110 volts and would be usable in the USA. Wonder why they are not being sold in the bigger market south of the border?

Sharpe Upright

I have one from the 90's here in the states. A cousin had bought brand new at some point. It is much like a Panasonic
upright from the 80's. Except a much high quality of construction and engineering. It is a Toruqise and Gray color
with a metal chrome handle coming up from the body of the machine. It is so easy to push and turn. Suction is right up there with any Kirby. The tools plug into the back like a Panasonic too. It has a brush roll that looks a little like a Eureka VG II! Has good dirt capacity and dosen't really loose
air flow as the bag fills. Has an on/off belt lever and automaticly adjust to the carpet and hardsurface.
I us it if I want to trade off my Heritage for a few sweeps !
Great machine.
