Yesterday I received a package that contains some vacuum parts from 2011Hoover700, a friend of mine, and I got a Hoover Dial a matic hose with the suction control, along with a Hoover convertible motor assembly and a Hoover Elites motor for my white caddy vac that I accidentally messed up a couple weeks ago. I was excited to get the motor but I wanted to fix it up due to the fact it was a bit rusty and I'm trying to get the armature out to restore it a bit but it's stuck in the bearing. I've been using a hammer along with a pin and not having to damage the armature screw with the hammer alone. Anyone else had this problem before?

that motor is trash. youll fry the field coil the first time you use it being that siezed and the motor field plates and motor windings so severely corroded. removing the commutator shaft on a motor that far gone is a waste of time. your friend gave you a paperweight....

I've had such problems before. Some I've solved some I've ruined.
I would be open to suggestions in case I come across another similar situation.
Thanks and keep up the good restorations.

bnsd60m9200 - He did not in any way state he was going to power the motor up like this. He is trying to dismantle the motor to clean it up.

For getting the bearing off the hub, you will need something that will dissolve the rust from the shaft to free the part and a lot of patience with a bearing puller. Might try brake parts cleaner (but dont get that on the motor windings and be sure to clean up because it leaves a slight film)

For cleaning the rust and grime off the motor, some steel wool (on the winding block/heatsink only) and CRC Electric Parts Cleaner should do the trick at getting most of the rust off.

There is also WD-40 Specialist Electrical Contact Cleaner that you might try too.

Good morning. I got some good news, I finally got the armature out after spraying some WD 40 penetrant overnight and gave it a big tap with a hammer and got it out.

Nice work - you are half way there.
Hope the other bearing comes off easily also, as they will certainly need replacement if you plan to use this machine on a regular basis. Do they even turn at all, and if so, smoothly?

The rust can be carefully removed if desired but keep any rust removers or other chemicals off the windings. Brush out the windings with a soft brush and look for any corrosion, breaks, or breakdown of the varnish insulation.
This could be salvageable. Might as well try at least since you have it.
Keep it up!

Texaskirbyguy, Hi. I'm actually planning on putting this armature on a 12 amp motor from a Hoover upright w/removable tool rack after accidentally messing up the motor a couple weeks ago while cleaning it up top to bottom. The bearing on this turns good still believe it or not but some of the rust still need to come off.

Your armature can probably be saved as Rob mentioned. This is why I pickup Elites and their variants when I can. Especially the earlier Elites. I'm 37 and in the 90s and mid to early 2000s these were fairly common vacs. I know some collectors cringe at these. I've heard some collectors say the convertible started the downfall of Hoover. It's all about prospective and the passage of time.

Hope you get your Caddy Vac working again.

But, Kenny, as you know

Convertible made Hoover their fortune. well, certainly added a comma. Dick Pike told me himself that Elite was never supposed to replace Convertible. But, they are lighter and use fewer parts. Hoover "couldn't make them fast enough". My aunt bought one in 1997. Aside from a few belts, it's still fine. As long as people take care of their stuff...............

Well the bearings are already forfeit, so don't worry about destroying them. Just be sure to get the trade number off of them before you do, so you can buy new ones.
