Made a video of my Royals today and thought I would share. If any of you can tell what is wrong with the 801 by the sound it's making, I'd love to know...

Thanks :0)

Royal 801-beleive the new brushroll may be loading the motor too much.Disconnect the belt and try running it again and see if it sounds normal. The brushrolls with stiffeners should not be used on older Royals.Try to get the brushes without the stiffeners. They should be available.Usually vacuum dealers that use ESSCO and HESCO should be able to get them. And the little Royal Dirt Devil Broom vac-used to have one of those-now I regret leaving it with a house I sold years ago. That was before I collected vacuums-and thought I could get another.

Hmmmm, thanks for responding. I said in the video that the newer Royal had the brushroll with stiffeners but the 801 had the chevron without them, so I don't understand what you mean by your response.

I think the new belt is too tight maybe.... I need to use a non-knurled belt on such an old machine, though my Kirby DS 80 had no problem with a Knurled belt, I know it's more powerful than the 801.

Good idea about taking the belt off to see if it makes a difference in the sound of the motor....

Bobby, thanks for making the video. I really enjoyed it. I too have the Royal Dirt Devil Broom Vac. I agree with you, the fact that it looked like a baby Kirby is what drew me to it in the first place. All said I do think it is a pretty darn good little cleaner especially for small areas. That is the first time I have seen the Black and Decker cordless vac in operation. Looks like it does a decent job. I really think I want to get the Hoover cordless Linx, I have heard a lot of good things about them. Thanks again for sharing the fun.

Terry

Yeah, Terry, but your Broom Vac has the step on switch, much better than the rocker! I bet you would love an Linx stick vac!

Ben, the serial number is A 83707

I always assumed that meant it was from 83 just like me!

Bobby,

Sorry... but that is the general production number. There would have to be something else in front of it. Think something like: 07J-A-83707. The "07J" part would be the manufacturing date, which breaks down as: 0 = calendar year 1970, 7 = calendar year decade 1970s, and J = calendar month September. The "A" preceding the sequence number is the line and shift the vacuum came off of.

In conclusion, a true 1983 Royal 801 would have a serial number would look like this, for example: H83-A-32857. It is the "H83" that would be the manufacturing date, this case being August 1983.

The serial # you found, A-83707, would most likely line up with a 1973 date of manufacturing. Thus I believe your 801 is from 1973.

Take a look at the link to find out more about them.
