According to my grandfather's diary he worked for Royal vacuum in the early 50s and we've had this vacuum around for my entire life so I can only assume that it came from him what do you think of it?

Its one of the straight suction uprights from early 70's that very few people know about and even less has seen.
It looks like the one Ben showed me before. Its a vacuum I'd love to have.

Les,

No, this machine is not the 311, but rather it is an Electro-Hygiene 230 or 2-230 that was produced from 1945 to 1955.

Both the bag and the handle assembly have been replaced around 1985, because the blue bag I see was originally used on commercial Royal uprights at that time. The original bag would have been a much darker shade of blue and said, on the front, "ELECTRO HYGIENE," and the original handle assembly had a detachable (pigtail) cord which had for years been a hallmark of Electro-Hygiene uprights.

I know this one is a 230 or 2-230 because I can still see the exclusive chemical chamber (which is mounted between the nozzle and fan case) that Royal used on all Electro-Hygiene-brand uprights before the revolving-brush model 285 (same as Royal's 801) came out in 1955 to replace the 2-230.

Jeff Schroff, Sr. (hygiene903) knows a whole lot about Electro-Hygiene vacuums like this one.

I noticed

The red electro hygiene plate. I thought it could be the rarest royal vacuum. That's why Ben is here with some cold hard facts. Thanks Ben.
I still would like the vacuum. Lol
If we can get Jeff to post. I know he got a complete hose and toolset within last year. I'm thinking it's right around this models production.

Nice

My 990 has the little bag and attachments like this.
I really like how imo electro hygiene is treated as a high end royal. Its got a nice box and just attention to detail.

Electro=Hygiene!

Hi guys, sorry I didn't get a chance to post on this thread earlier, but had quite an ordeal that lasted over 2 months and started with a trip to Galion Hospital emergency room on April 25 with swollen right leg and foot. After 4 days there and an exploratory surgery I was sent to OSU-Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, where I had 3 more surgeries and was there until May 11, when I was sent to a nursing home for recovery, rehab, & therapy. I was pretty much bedfast until about the 3rd week of June, when I started getting up and getting into a wheelchair, and finally got to go home on July 10. So, the day that the last couple posts were made on this thread was the day I was moved from hospital to nursing home.
Anyway, Ben has most of it right, but whether or not the original bag would have been blue would depend on if it's a 2-230 or a 230, as the 230 (without the 2- prefix) would have had a black bag with the same red and gold printing as the blue bag. Here's a pic of my 230. The printing is quite faded but if you look close you can see it. Also, it's possible just the cord (including the section that went through the handle) and handle grip may have been replaced instead of the complete handle assembly. Original cord would have been a black Belden cord.

Mine

Isn't straight suction but my old royal is. The hygiene is 999 the one with the belt lifter.
I love the little bag, handle, different cord etc.
There just really cool vacuums

Chris,

That's a beautiful 230 you have there! But it looks like faded printing on the bag and missing attachments seems to be something we have in common, although we are both lucky to have the original bags, cords, and handle grips on our machines. We're both missing the wands and crevice tool, you're missing the dust brush and I'm missing the floor brush.
The model 230 is also the one that two of my uncles used to sell, although one of them wasn't in the family yet at the time. Uncle Dick sold Electro-Hygienes in the late 40's and became friends with another salesman named Red, and eventually introduced him to his sister-in-law, my Aunt Mary. Red and Mary got along well and were married in August of 1950, and were together the rest of their lives.
