I am looking to buy a Royal all metal upright. I'm not sure I want to buy a new Everlast model because the reviews of them state that they are extremely loud. What model should I look for that would be a great deep cleaner, but not overly loud?

I have a Royal 8000 from about 1990 I think. It has a 6 amp. motor, and a brushroll with stiffners, and does a great job on my plush cut pile carpeting. It's not loud at all to me, but the newer ones with the higher amped motors are screamers. It's one that's in my rotation that I use on occasion, and love the way it handles. Mine has the old screw type height adjuster as opposed to the step on type, which suits me since all my carpet is the same pile. This may have been the model when they changed the setup mid-production and gave it a new model number, not sure though. It has maroonish color trim similar to the Kirby Legend II.

Thanks for the reply. So I guess my goal would be to look for a 6 amp motor? These older ones seem hard to find. I have found a couple of commercial ones in thrift stores, but they were so abused and in such sad shape that I left them there.

Tim,

If you could describe exactly how bad those ones were, then at least take a picture of them as proof of whether or not it would be worth it to restore them.

About that model 8000: it was produced from 1988-91. Models built prior to March 1990 will have a 6-blade impeller fan; those produced on that date or after will have a 9-blade impeller fan.

Thanks for the info on the Royals. As for the ones in the thrift store--that was a couple of months ago. I'm sure they've been trashed by now. However, I will snap a of one the next time I see one.
