Royal Straight Suction Year

I have a friend who has a Royal straight suction upright, Model 1948. It has the usual black/red bag design and belt port at the front. Does anyone have any idea what years this vacuum might have been made? Sorry, no picture. I'm guessing sometime in the 20s or 30s. Would anyone know? Thanks in advance.

I believe you might be referring to the re-branded Packard model 1948, and I think that one came out in, well, '48.

I Agree With Ben!

The red and black bag is usually found on post-war machines, although it could have been a replacement. Also, an earlier straight suction model would have had a removable nozzle instead of having a port to connect the hose. Here is a pre-war Electro-Hygiene model 94. A straight suction Royal of the same era would look similar. Also, any Royal built before 1928 would have the bag outlet on the opposite side of the fan case from where it is shown here.

If it looks like this it's a rebadged Royal, mine is a 1950 Packard model.
They were a premium when you bought a Packard, you had a choice of several different appliances i.e. a single door refrigerator, a vacuum cleaner, a sewing machine, etc.

Wow, thanks Jeff and Bikerray. That's great information. Especially, the part about being able to choose a refrigerator, vacuum cleaner or sewing machine. I wonder if the refrigerator and sewing machine were badged "Packard"?
