Hi guys,
Not into vintage vacuums my self, but I hate to trash an old item that someone might like to restore. I will give this vac to anyone that might be interested in restoring. If you live near York Pa. your welcome to stop and pick it up, will consider shipping UPS ground if your willing to pay the shipping.

The vacuum runs, I believe it was my grandmothers. The rear wheel was replaced by an erector set wheel when I was a kid. The bag has become disconnected from the attachment, there may be a few minor parts missing, I'm just not familiar enough to know. If there is no interest in the vacuum world, I will just scrap it.
If anyone is interested, let me know.

Braided cloth or asbestos cord, it's got to be 1920 or older. Definitely do not throw out!

If the deal with jrdavis doesn't work out, I'd be interested too.
 
especially very old seeing as it's only has 3 wheels. I'm pretty sure they went to 4 wheels by the late 20s. luckily I have some extra parts because I got one of these old Royals from ebay years ago saying "does not work" well I guess not- when I got it there was no armature when I took the nozzle off(you know- a "what you see is what you get- no refunds"
 
Probably should have cleaned it up a bit before taking pics----most of the dirt is sawdust---the vac is in better shape then I thought---really don't think it will take a massive amount of time and money to restore, IMHO
That cord is definitively some cloth bound type and in great shape, considering it's been in a garage attic for 50 years.
To the fellow from Oklahoma, you should check the UPS site to get an estimate of cost to ship from York, Pa.----I have shipped items to Oklahoma in the past and it cost three times the cost of shipping all the way to California, something about alot of rural areas with poor access for UPS.

I would say weight is 16 lbs. Its low end 13 but closer to 16. I know royal 880 is 16lbs 1030z is 19.6. A early 500 kirby is 15 d80 16 a classic thru legend 2 is 24lbs G series 26lbs with attachments 34lbs. Just some random knowledge I've picked up over the past couple of years.

Id be interested in restoring. If all 5 other people fall through. Id say its mid 30s vacuum. I have pa geier i couldn't find info anywhere on it. The cord look identical to yours(mine is a handvac). It had 3 of 32 stamped on the fan. I have it apart right now it cleaned up nice. Just waiting on bag im having made and the power switch has issues it wont turn off. Its a safe guess the neutral wire has hot wire touching it keeping circut open. Its switch is nothing like ive seen so i can fix but have to use my electrical tester to see which wires are which. Well ya im interested but others deserve it more than me.

hey thanks for the approximate ship info. I see you're a Kirby man like myself. Mom and dad had a Kirby Classic Omega when I was born and have pics of me running it when I was probably 2 or 3. I saw a new Royal in a vac shop in 1985 and had to have it- I guess it was something about the shine and whatever scent they had in it. I was almost 7 and a week later I was crying wanting my "Big Brown Kirby" I called it. Never got it back. There's millions out there I know. I wonder whatever happened to it? Well my friend, you ever want to talk Kirbys or any other oldies I'm here!
 
I found this ad from Google Books archive of Good Housekeeping Magazine Volume #68, from the year 1919. It is the earliest the "cleans by air alone" tagline is used. It doesn't list what model vacuum it was, but it looks similar.

any idea?

how old is this ad?(I should know but I can't seem to) I know it is a bit older than the model 98 because I think the earliest ones had the bag on the right side
 
Don't know why shipping to Oklahoma is so expensive, actually it was $62.00
So if anyone is interested, you have to make arrangements by Thursday night---June 28th or it goes in the trash Friday.
Here are the weights and dimensions from UPS 16.762 lbs-----46"x11"x11" I packed this up pretty good, the vac only weighed 9-10 lbs. on a bath scale. You"d be shipping from York, Pa. 17403.
I'm only going to try this one more time, have to much to do.

I really don't need another project. But like... I'm still interested.

I emailed you. If you take ofc handle 2 or 3 parts it will fit in 14x12x18.
I shipped a royal 1030z 20 lbs in that size of box. Bottom holding fork on. Is a screw w and mid handle is a screw. The cord stays in handle just folds in 3 sections and emptor twists off. The 46 inch is why its sio much.

Your welcome. Glad it was easy on you. I really appreciate the opportunity to make this machine like new. Its not everyday you can get a 90 year old vacuum with original bag that runs.
The bag getting cleaned is what im debating. I was told dry cleaning might work. I don't think so though. I may blow out and use tooth brush scrub out rough spots. I know not to soak in tub.
I really like old machines. My kirby 505 all original i haven't started yet. I have i believe 1930 pa geier handvac. I want to say 1932 or 1935 from date stamp on the fan. Im having small bag made for it. I just dont know how to get into switch which looks like it is riveted on. I may use solder gun to loosen rivets. The power is stuck on.
This royal will be my oldest. I within last week have a new polisher sander and air compressor. Ill look at patent numbers on plates to figure out year. I have read they just have serial numbers. Wuth patents should narrow year down. I think it may be royal deluxe around 1928.
Im excited about it. Ill be careful but try to work on as much as I can. Ill also take lots of pics maybe video.

Les, I would warn against dry cleaning. As it's basically a method of washing stuff with solvents, it would almost certainly take the lettering off the bag.

You can drill out rivets easily, it just takes a bit of patience when you don't want to damage anything around it. Center punch the rivets, use a drill bit approximately the size (or smaller) of the rivet shank, drill as slowly as you can, and I would advise holding the rivet still with a small pair of needle nose pliers, or wire cutters, to stop it from spinning. When you're done, you can replace the rivets with round head slotted screws and nuts, it will look like it was made that way.

I'm not doing anything to the bag. I found problem with the switch it had fried wires electrical tape and shorted out. My handvac seems to be around same time royal was made. I looked at bag and decided blowing off is all im doing. The vacuum doesn't seem to bad. I got most of figured out. I just buffed outside working way in. I believe adjust o right or whatever it was called plate by handle is super thin. I can only put poly dip on it or spray paint black because sanding will destro piece. The vacuum is in really good shape. What I have done looks really good. I'll post pics soon. It's ben super hot so haven't worked on as much as I wanted to. I also had to wait for sandpape. I got it so maybe later this week get a lot more don.
