Can any Royal enthusiasts tell me more about the model 606. Particularly Ben?

It states on the spec plate that it is a 606. However, a manufacturer's spec sheet that I have states that there is a 606A/606AZ.
The commercial cleaner 606A has a twill hinged type bag which does not take a paper bag insert.
Commercial cleaner 606-AZ has a zippered outer bag with the"toss out" paper bag insert.

Was the "A" & the "AZ" just a designation on paper or was it actually inscribed on the spec plate?

Now, the 606 looks very much like an 801 with side zippered out bag. The only difference that I see are the front wheels on the 606 are slightly wider. That's it! Are these models close in the production lineup? And, if the 606 is a commercial cleaner, then why does it have only a 2-wire cord? This machine appears to be completely original. But, then again, who knows!

Ben, I will get you the serial number on the 611 that I have. What I need to know is, is the front bearing a sleeve bearing or a ball bearing?

bearing

you can tell by looking at it if its a sleeve or ball bearing. There would be a place to add oil just to the rear of the fan housing on the right side. It will be either a red cap or more likely a screw. my 801 has front and rear sleeve bearings with screws instead of red oil caps. if yours doesnt have a place to oil the front bearing, then it is a ball bearing

Lou,

I'd like to think it's a sleeve bearing, if the model you have was made in the '70s.

BTW, do you have a picture of that specification sheet for the 606? If so, please either upload it here, or send it to me at (my new primary e-mail) or to (alternate, use in case my primary e-mail doesn't work).

The 606A is the model with the square headlight (like the 880, 903 and the later 608 commercial). All the 606A's I found here and there, have the square headlight. Attached below is a picture of a 1973-built 606A (with replacement gray zippered bag, and a 1988-91 light blue Adjust-O-Rite plate) by VCCC user djtaylor.

All "Z" models have the zippered bag for disposable paper inserts. But Royal didn't explicably include that designator on the nameplate until 1990 (e.g. 670Z, 690Z).

Square Headlight? HUH?????

Thanks Nick! I should have been able to deduce that info just by looking at it the same way you did! What a dufus I am!!

The 611 has no oil "spouts" so therefore they must be ball bearings? I will try to confirm this tomorrow and take pictures.

Ben, my 606 does not have a square headlight but rather the rounded headlight of the 801 (model 801 with side zippered sateen bag). What gives here? The nozzle spec plate appears to be virgin to the nozzle casting. Could this be either a very early 606 or a later run 606 with leftover 801 castings? I am so confused. And, were the earlier commercial machines as I had asked previously, equipped with only 2-wire cords as this one?

I will send the pics directly to you since I cannot seem to get them to load here.

Lou,

Some of them did, yes. Jeff Schroff (hygiene903) has a 1971 model 606 (with a circa-1985 replacement bag on it) that he told me has a 2-wire cord on it. I may be led to believe that Royal assumed the 3-wire setup on their commercial line starting in 1973 or 1974.

Royal 611 info

Ben,

Here is the number sequence from my 611.... I know it was made in January of 1984. What other significance is there to the remaining numbers, if any? And, it' s a 4.5 amp motor with only a rear oil fill spout--which means it has sleeve bearing (?).

Lou,

I wanted to say that your 1984 model 611, if you still have that to this day, would only have the rear ball bearing.

Royal phased out the replaceable front bearing between 1976 and 1979 on those models with ball bearing motors.

Here's a picture of a 1971 model 801 that had the replaceable front bearing. Note two red oil caps in this case, which is of course different than the 801 in Nick's picture in which screws served as the caps.

And in a 1985 Royal owner's manual, it states that at the time...

"Some models have two oiler caps: front and rear of motor housing. Ball bearing motors have only one oiler cap at back of motor (ball bearing is factory lubricated for the life of the housing). Models 153, 602 and 777 have a protective oiler cap only at front of motor housing to expose oil hole..."

This passage would seem irrelevant by the time of that particular printing (April 1985) since pretty much all the Royal motors only had one bearing present.

Royal 611

Ben, Believe it or not I think that the model 611 was a non-repairable motor for the most part. In other words, the sleeve bearing were designed for longer-life but once they were worn, replacing the bearing was a very remote option. I had been told that many Royal motors are very difficult to get to fit back together once take apart.

I still have now two model 611s and they are both out in the garage loft. Should I find a nice complete motor housing I would use it to replace the motor on the 611 and make it a nicer FrankenRoyal. To date I have not found a motor.

Thanks for your response!
