For those of you who work on Royal metal uprights: may I please ask how do you get the wheels off, so I can clean each one up individually? I have a 1987 model 662 that is in need of its wheels be cleaned up.

According to what Royal parts lists I have, these wheels can supposedly be removed if you use a flat-blade screwdriver to pry off the wheel retainers.

Thank you,

Royal Wheel Retainers

It depends on the retainer. Older ones had a C-clip retainer, newer ones had a cap type retainer. The C-clip is easily removed with a small screwdriver or pliers and snaps back on.
The cap type retainer needs to be pried, working all the way around until you pop it off. It is actually easier to remove with a small nail puller IF you can get it behind the flat part of the retainer. That is not always possible to do, as some wheels have an inset cut into them that the retainer fits inside of. I also recommend getting a couple replacement retainers if this is the style of retainer you are working with, as they are easily damaged beyond the point of reuse.

Jeff,

Thank you. According to a parts list for another machine (the 886/887), the wheels did not have any C-clips.

And I was told by another user about having to have several of those wheel retainer caps (1-801711-A00) on hand.
