Royal Metal Upright Expert Question

Hey Guys!

I have a later model 801 Metal Royal Upright with a 4.5 amp motor. Very gently used and in perfect condition.

Question is why does the belt hang about 1/8 to 1/16 over the spindle? I did replace the brush roll with a double row brush roll (square end) and I used belt number 1044260001. The same belt with the old brush roll did the same thing.

Is this supposed to work this way?

The adjust o rite cap should show how the belt goes on.
Im guessing you have the brush roll in backwards. The belt follows the grooves on the brush roll and that keeps it clockwise rotation about 1/8 inch from the end of the spindle.
Look at your brush roll check to see if arrow on the brush roll is the same as the cover/sole plate. It probably isn't on right as the brush roll makes run on the spindle in the right location.

Did you install the brush roll correctly?

The arrows on the brush roll and the rug plate must line up exactly.

Thanks for your quick response! Yes, I am aware of the arrow on the rug plate and the direction of the arrow as this also determines that the brushes will sweep from the end to the middle and thrust the dirt up into the impeller. So yes, the brush roll is installed correctly and since it is new, I have it set on #1. The machine appears to never have been serviced or repaired for any reason so I am going to assume that the spindle is original. I thought that maybe the spindle was too short but it appears to be the original one that came on the machine when new. The only thing I can think of is if the brush roll is not a GENUINE Royal part, then the small center "hub" perhaps does not match the original specs and therefore offsets the belt position thus causing it to ride forward.

Any other thoughts?

Here's what the inside of my 1985 Royal 880 looks like with the belt over the shaft.

Since you say your 801 has a 4.5 amp motor, then it should be exactly the same as what my 1985 880 has. I have not had any issues with the double-bristle brush roll (w/stiffeners) in my machine.

Hey Ben!

My 801 is the near the last of the run so I think it is more on its way to being an 880. Mine looks the same as yours-just that the belt hangs over the spindle instead of sitting a little back from the edge.

Louis, try cleaning the shaft with some emory paper. While the machine is running and the belt is off the shaft hold some empty paper on the shaft to clean it up a bit.

Check

The grooves in the brush roll. Make sure you don't have burned up rubber. It could be the wrong belt. It fits but it's wider than it should be. If you had the wrong fan the belt would fly off instantly. Check to make sure there are no cracks being caused by the bottom plate.

Like Les just said, pictures of your vacuum and the problem you are facing would help, that way we all know for sure what should be done.

The 4.5 amp 801 (series F-G) originally used:
1043260001 belt (use 1044260001)
2059721000 brush roll
and these motor parts
1880001000 armature (4.5 amp)
1880002000 field (4.5 amp)
1608004000 impeller fan (1/4" or 6.4mm dia. shaft hole)
1608261000 driveshaft

I did everything you guys told me to do and checked everything. What I think it is is that the brush roll MAY NOT be a genuine Royal part and therefore it may cause the belt to function differently. The belt just hangs over the shaft by an 1/8 or maybe a 1/16. It works perfectly regardless. I will try to take a pic of it and post it back here.
