I'm looking for a new upright vacuum cleaner. I need for using in residential homes.

First I thought the Royal Commercial Metal Upright (CR5128Z) 14 inch would be great. Then I learned it is discontinued and our local store doesn't have it anymore, but I can buy online. The local store said Royal has a lot of problems with their motors and the newer models not the same as the older ones, also Royal doesn't make any parts. Is that right?
It is this model a reliable? What is the risk buying of it?

Second choice is the Sanitaire Commercial Upright SC886F (c. But is has a lot of plastic part, that makes me nervous and not sure about it. This one is available at the local store and they recommend it.

Which one of these is the better? What is your recommendation?

Hmmm

Royal motors are beasts. Sanitairre motors are just as strong.
The sanitairre belts are replaced often. The sanitairre brush roll is metal and replaceable bristles. The royal is wooden. Royal you rarely change the belt.
Just narrowly I'd say royal. The height adjust is much easier. The royal is easier to push across the carpet. They both are going to do superior jobs. The royal has a better bag filtration system than sanitairre.
Hear what you want but the royal maybe once a year change brushroll carbon brush and belt. That's about it for the royal. Sanitairre you replace the belt once or twice a week. Carbon brushes and brush inserts yearly. It's the belt filtration and ease of use.
You can't go wrong with either but who you heard royal info from is bunk. They make parts and easy to maintain.
It's close but royal is my pick.

my 2c

I'd go for the sanitaire, why? Parts availability and cost. I do like the handle switch and height adjustment a little better on the royal since the non screw style doesn't require you to bend over to change it. From the sounds of it though it's probably going to see a lot of usage so I'd stick with a machine that you should be able to get parts for years to come. Make sure it's got the quick clean fan chamber though, replacing a fan is SO much easier when it has that.

Yes Royal no longer manufactures parts. As a matter of fact, TTI (The parent company of Royal) has ditched Royal and Royal's sister brand Dirt Devil in favor of focusing more on their Hoover and Oreck brands. But there should be plenty of parts stocked at most warehouses to last for quite a while, even if there are aftermarket parts to come by in a matter of years. Unless of course if we get those Royal metal uprights again branded as either Hoover or Oreck. My local vacuum store that's a TTI dealer where I worked at before, I don't ever recall having a Royal come in before with motor problems. I don't even notice that much of a difference between the original and the TTI Royals as far as quality and performance goes. But they have had Sanitaires come in with bad motors, that's one of the reasons why they quit selling Sanitaire at their stores. At least parts are super easy to find and are very reasonable to get. So out of the two, the Royal would be my pick. Belts last longer, more reliable, performs better, and they're assembled in the states.

@sandor

I would go with a Hoover hushtone+ or SEBO like vacuum
Sanitaire is currently undergoing a little turmoil Bissell purchase of them.
As stated above TTI no longer makes metal royals as of 2018 prats are NLA.

I hope this helps .
