Hello all!

Well My new Royal 9700 came yesterday. It has square ends (July 1990). It was fitted with a non-magnet brush roll which explains why the green light was off (thanks to Stan). So I am in search of a new brush roll with square ends. Ben was right when he said they would be hard to find. I have found magnet brush rolls with hexagonal ends. That seller said his 5 distributors don't have any.

So, my thinking is use a hex end and just swap the caps. Is this doable?
Are the fittings compatible? Are they now available as a replacement part?

The other thing I learned was that replacement bristle inserts were discontinued as of 3rd quarter 2015. I am flabbergasted as to why they would do that. Since so many vintage owners are out there, why cut off the most natural way to update and maintain fresh bristles and force folks to search far and wide for scarce and limited remaining supply of brush rolls? I don't get it. Aren't replacement bristles in high demand from everyone? Anybody still have some?
Trying to understand the rationale and options.

Royal vs Kirby...

Well, one thing you may want to consider is to sell your 9700 on and look for a good used Heritage II or Legend II if you want a Royal look a like machine. The cleaning  Performance is as good or better than the 9700 and there is no problem finding parts for any of these Kirby's as they are plentiful. If you want maximum performance, go with a Kirby Diamond (G7) or newer machine.

I have nothing against Royal and I do own one myself although it is a much newer one. I own the Royal Everlast 8300 and it is a Beast with that 10 amp motor. It was made in 2008 and parts for it are fairly easy to find.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

bought the M4000 too- NOS

Well, I ended up buying the 4000 as well which I didn't need! It is new in the box from Cleveland. 1st quarter of 2002. 10.5 amp. Still packaged in the box.

Concerned about updating my newly arrived 9700. I am most excited about that right now. Still hoping for some additional thoughts on the above. I am hopeful the fittings are universal, the end caps are swappable. I will do some measuring tomorrow.

Wish I did..

My 9700 came with no manual or parts list but I know a guy in Richmond VA who ran who ran a shop for years and is selling off old inventory I could ask him. Do you want me to?

Thinking it through

As I think about this..it seems to me the only way to swap the caps would be if the underside to the hex caps would also be square because they must fit the square fitting on the receiving end. I can check my 886 or 4000 tomorrow. That should tell me something. Wondering if anybody else had experience with this issue.

..Re-thinking this..

Thank you Ben. That is helpful. What I said earlier cannot be right that is-
A square end is a square end and a hex end is a hex end. So they just have to be different. I'll have to check against my other uprights. I'd they made universal fittings customers would not be challenged by this.
