HI all, I'm a noob. I have a Supreme Electro Hygiene metal upright. Information plate between rear wheels on rear of cleaning head has the following: Ser. #B84D 03404, Model 903, 4.5 amp, cleaning machine 760G. It has a light grey or off white bag with red lettering. Would like to know what all this means. Also, need to know what belt and brushroller type/part numbers are available for this otherwise very clean vacuum cleaner. I understand from looking on the net that there are two types of brushrollers (regular and ball bearing) that might fit this vacuum as well as different belt types for the different brushroller types. On this I don't know from Adam. The brushroller is 13" long and is of the square end cap type. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Could you please submit pictures of your 903? I want to see what it looks like, so that I can help you obtain the correct trim parts for it.

Going by the date code you found, your machine was made in February 1984.

The available brush rollers as of late:
2059721000 - single bristle
2675221000 - double bristle w/ ball bearings

Former brush rollers:
2159273000 - single bristle, sleeve bearings
2080221000 - double bristle, sleeve bearings
2180273000 - double bristle, sleeve bearings
2801226000 - double bristle, sleeve bearings

Belts:
1043260001 - soft belt
1044260001 - high tension flat belt (required if 2675221000 brush roll is specified)

Thank you,

Ben

Thanx for your quick reply Ben. From your activity on these forums I suspected that you would be the most knowledgeable and most likely to reply. As you might see from the attached pictures the brushroller has two single rows of bristles and two plastic beaters(?) on each side. The brushrollers you listed in your reply make no mention of these plastic parts. Obviously the brushroller has sleeve bearings. The belt number is a replacement and was a beast to replace due to its tightness. I suspect it was the wrong belt as it is not one of those you listed (1-7602200-001). Maybe this is why the brushroller bearing failed. The cover plate says "Adjust Rite" if that means something in particular

Just as I suspected! The belt I'm seeing is part #1-672260-001, which is designed to be used only on metal Royal uprights with the hex-ended brush rolls (1992 to present).

You will need to use the following teams of belt and brush in your machine, as stated earlier:
#1-043260-001 belt + #2-059721-000 brush roll
or...
#1-044260-001 belt + #2-675221-000 brush roll

Ben, do you agree that the wrong size belt was the probable cause of the bearing failure? From the degree of force used to get the belt on the drive shaft it would appear so. Also, where is the best place from your experience to obtain the parts for a machine this old? Thanx again for all your help.

Yes, the belt you used is the wrong one indeed and of course that would be the cause of the brush roll bearing failure.

You could call Royal at 1-800-321-1134 and they may be able to conjure a list of dealers near you. You can also ask them about the parts you want, and which are to be used with your machine.

Spoke to Royal yesterday and after repeatedly being put on hold for research and tech consults I was told that they could not find any materials on the 903. Go figure. They did give me a number for a local dealer but they were closed. Doubt if they could help but I will try tomorrow. Thanx again.

Ordered the brushroller and extra belts yesterday from JAF. $40 and will be up and running in a few days.

I also want you to say hello to Jeff Sr. Schroff (hygiene903). He likes Electro-Hygiene uprights, and among those in his collection, he has three 903s dating from 1976, 1982 and 1983 (the latter two having the same 4.5 amp motor as yours).

Ben, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but was busy with car repairs. Got an email reply from Jeff re: the parts I needed wherein he referred me to, who else, you. Got the double bristle brushroller with the ball bearings and the flat belt that you recommended. I was wondering about the broken brushroller I have now with the plastic beaters(?). From the pictures of the brushroller I bought, it doesn't have the plastic beaters. Don't know if this will affect the efficiency or not, but time will tell. By the way, I made an offer on the attachments, a counteroffer was made and I accepted. After moving several times since I purchased the machine mine went away somewhere. Again, thanx for that lead.

Fritz,

Glad to hear you have parts and attachments on the way. Ben is right, I am into Electro-Hygiene in a big way! I have 20 of them in my collection, including the 3 903's that Ben mentioned. Partly because I sold them myself in 1974 and again in 1976, and partly because of family connections. Two of my Aunts and a Great-Aunt had them when I was a kid, and two of my Uncles sold them before I was born, one of which actually became my Uncle because of Electro-Hygiene! Let me explain.
My Uncle Dick was selling Electro-Hygiene in the late 40's, early 50's. He became friends with another salesman named Red and at one time told him "you should meet my sister-in-law sometime." Uncle Dick introduced Red to my Aunt Mary, they hit it off from the start, and eventually got married. Aunt Mary and Uncle Red celebrated 50 years together before they passed away, and Uncle Red got back into selling sweepers briefly in the mid 60's. This time it was Electrolux, and when we spent Christmas with them in 1965 (the year my Dad passed away) Uncle Red demoed a turquoise model G for me.
But beside the family connections and having sold them myself is the fact that Electro-Hygiene is just a great all round vacuum cleaner. It's powerful, durable, and maneuverable. Can't ask for much more than that.
Here is a group shot of some of my Electro-Hygienes, Left to right are 3 285's, a 777, 880, 890, and 980.

And here's the newest of my 903's, with attachments and extra accessories. This one is frequently the daily driver at our house.

Model 80

The first model of Electro-Hygiene, beginning in March of 1934. Note the inline switch. It was also my first restoration project.
