Rob's Tradition restoration...

How Inspiring!

I recently just (finally) got my Tradition from Fleabay. it had gotten lost in the mail until a couple days ago. (Ben, this is the one in the video you commented about.) I have many parts to buy, but I'll take my time. Rob, your Tradition is a fine jewel of a machine!

It Appears To Be.

The metal fan, upon inspection, appears to be alright. Of course, I'll know better after installation. It physically is not bent, and it only has two really noticeable chips on it.

Thanks for the complement!
My machine was a bit rough, but looks like in similar condition to yours at start, so I am sure yours will restore well also.
Start a thread when you begin your resto project - I enjoy watching the progress.
Your fan looks fine from the picture. If there are any blades that have bends, do not try to bend them back as die-cast can break easily. The one in my Omega had a blade bent 1/8" but it runs fine.
In the fan picture, I see you have the blue attachment 'suitcase'. Do you have all the attchments for it?

Ben, my Kirby service guy here says that that attachment case was another Tradition SNAFU as it is VERY hard to unlatch it. I agree - it IS hard to open, and with very capable fingers! If one had weak fingers, arthritis, long nails or such, it would be almost impossible. He said they went back to the cardboard box after a sea of complaints. What is your insight on this?

And inquiring minds want to know how does something as large as a vacuum cleaner get lost in the mail? :oO

Rob,

Well, what you had observed might have been the reason why, for the Heritage I (and roughly six months of Heritage II sales), Kirby had reverted back to the standard cardboard box for their basic tools, and might also have been the explanation why Kirby didn't sell the white version of it during the 1979-80 season of Tradition sales.

It was in March 1985 that Kirby finally unleashed the "Kirby Kaddy," during Heritage II sales. Other changes for this model occurred at the same time: shaved nozzle, and replacement of belt-driven Turbo Brush with Zippbrush.

Fleabay Tradition

Ben-

Okay, so the fan has a date stamp of "76." Classic III fan maybe? This thing has been taken apart before and "messed with," from the looks of it. I will post disassembly pictures when I start the thread.

Rob-

Thank you for your confidence! I am sure it will turn out well, too. I will post a restoration thread on it indeed. So far as I can tell, no bent blades on the fan. It looks to be in good shape.
And boy do I agree with you on the difficulty of opening the carrying case! In my "unwrapping" video, I expressed some difficulty getting it open. To answer your question about what it has in it, it has "most" of the tools. I think, and don't quote me here, but I am fairly sure I am only missing the Crevice Tool (I have the radiator brush that goes on it though), the longer wand, the utility air nozzle (the smallest of the surface nozzles), and of course a hose to use it all with. Everything else is there. Granted, I have every attachment for the Heritage, but those won't fit the Tradition, as the safety switch is along the bottom of the fan case on the Tradition, and on the side of the fan opening on the Heritage. Bummer! The Tradition also didn't come with the Rug Nozzle, so I have no means of actually vacuuming with it. I took advantage of that problem though, and I thoroughly cleaned the bag and the insides of the Sani-Emtor. The bag is the original, by the way, and it does not have any fading anywhere, so far as I can tell. It does have the Style 1 bag system.
Random question: Is the Miracle Head Floor Polisher the right one for this model? It is in the picture earlier in this thread.

And finally, to make a long story short, when I bought it about a month ago, it got to the UPS warehouse about 10 miles away from my house, was dropped there, and then shipped back all the way to Nebraska. Now, I live in Florida, so that's a good trip! I contact the seller, he ships it again, and it winds up 200 miles away at a car dealership in Omaha. A CAR DEALERSHIP!! Lol! Fortunately, a salesman was kind enough to call me and inform me that he got it. He shipped it back to the seller, who once again ships it to me with a kind note to UPS saying, "Do NOT return! Item is Salvage. Deliver broken." Because when they dropped it, because the handle was detached from the fork, they thought they broke it. (Actually, the seller could only get it to fit in the box that way.) A month later, it -finally- winds up on my doorstep. Whew!

Ben,
You mean to say a white attachment suitcase was planned but not released?
I never did like the Kirby Kaddy as it looks big and cumbersome. I also like the tools hidden from view and not collecting dust themselves. The suitcase could have been nicer if there was a better latch, but I like the cardboard one the best, sans the snap. I prefer its slim profile and small footprint.

Tim,
No problem - take your time and take lots of pictures as you go. Have you rebuilt a Kirby before? If not take a look at my recent 'Kirby repair and restoration tips' thread. It is based on my Tradition & Omega so it might help you as well.
Those attachments are quite dirty but you will be amazed at how well they clean up. I washed mine all outside with simple green and some brushes. Even the well used ones look nice!
It appears you have the correct buffer head on it. Is that a console stereo behind the two vacs?

So looks like UPS struck again. I knew it couldn't have been USPS because when they loose a package, it is usually gone forever...

Back Stock

Ben-

I'd be satisfied with a small bit of overstock being used in the making of my machine. Lol.

Ron-

Yes, indeed I have rebuilt two Kirbys before, and lightly restored the Heritage pictured with the Tradition in the picture above. I rebuilt a Heritage II/Legend and a G4 for a friend of mine. I'll post a few pics of these Kirbys below. Nevertheless, your "Rebuild Tips and Tricks" will likely come in handy. (It's possible it may have anyways when I rebuilt the G4, as that was my very first one, and I wasn't sure on a few things, and that is how I first discovered VacuumLand.)

I was actually considering Simple Green to clean them, so if you have actually experienced cleaning with them and they came out good with it, then you have solidified my decision!

And yes! It is a Console Sterio! It is a 1976 AM/FM Phono/8-Track. What incredible bass it has, especially playing from the record player. It hasn't been used in awhile, but I'm sure it still works fine. Thanks for noticing!

Pic 1 is the only picture I have of the G4. Completely restored from the ground up. (What a doozie it was.)
Pic 2 is the UN restored Heritage II.
Pic 3 has the H2 showing off its newfound glimmer!
Pic 4 is both Heritage models after their individual polishing. Pretty, shiny Kirbys.
