Restore help?

Hey everyone,
I have a DeWalt 7-9 variable speed grinder/ polisher. I have Kirby's red and white polishing compound. I use regular buffing pad I can get mirror finish I need. I was wondering how to get deep cuts and gouges in aluminum. I was thinking sandpaper 200-400-800-2000. I think this might work but on a 8 inch wheel or would a palm sander be more effective.
If not sandpaper any one else have anything else they use. Thanks.

I wouldn't use any electric machine for removing deep gouges. They are quite hard to control, and if you're not careful, you can make it worse. I wouldn't use anything less than 400 grit for that, 1000 should be fine. Some gouges won't come out though, and you just have to live with that.

Thanks for help. That makes sense not to use any power at all. Would you work up to higher grit??
