Would appreciate some feedback on a work situation- my company employs a person with a developmental disability who does light housekeeping and janitorial in an office setting. This person can be unusually hard on an upright vacuum. I have replaced two commercial Hoover units and now using an Oreck XL commercial unit. The unit switch has been a weak point for unit as it dropped more often than in normal operating conditions. I have kept it running for two years. It is a light unit / easy to use and vacuums satisfactory. Should it fail again - should I buy another similar Oreck? Or is there a better suggestion that might be more robust in this situation? Maybe a simple old school metal Sanitiaire or Eureka would be best, simple and durable. While Orecks are simple they aren’t the most durable. My other suggestion would be to just go to the thrift store and find a $10 vacuum, when I breaks just go get another.

I’d suggest getting a used Kirby. They are very durable and repairable and are superior to Orecks in cleaning ability, as well as offering more versatile features (such as shampooing and hard floor cleaning). The current model is the Avelir 2, but the original Avelir is very similar and there are several on eBay for under $200.

As someone who repairs commercial vacs for a living...

Forget anything direct air, one rock or coin and a Sanitiare fan is finished and perhaps even the whole base assembly/fan housing. Kirby is the same, but far more expensive to repair. Look at an Advance VU500, Advance Spectrum or Windsor Sensor. If the budget isn't there, a Sanitaire EON series, all are durable, have automatic brushroll shutoff in event of a jam, no belts to wear out no fans to detonate, etc.

I personally wouldn't recommend a direct air machine for commercial usage. You're better off to use a bypass machine instead. Windsor, Lindhaus, Proteam, etc. It doesn't matter as long as it's professional commercial grade.
