I have an all metal Royal upright model 996. We use it a few times aweek as our daily driver. Today I desided to changed the belt for the first time since we got the machine December 2010. I don't think I've ever had such a hard time changing a belt. I tried the plastic belt lifter which I broke; therefore ended up using a screw driver. I can't believe that changing a belt for a Royal upright should be so hard. Is there an easier way to change the belt without breaking a tool that was made for that reason? No wonder no one evrer uses the tools.

did you use a proper Royal belt-A correct belt should not break the Royal belt lifter tool.Seems like the belt you are trying to use is putting too much tension on the motor shaft-this will also damage the bearings.

It was always difficult . . .

Using a screwdriver always served me well with many brands requiring the same but belt removal -- especially for machines with vertically situated fans --always proves difficult and annoying for conversion to attachment use. However, as in past it comes with the turf.

Royal, still continues to use its way old-style all metal design because the overall sturdiness of these machines PLUS the rug cleaning ability prove worth it. It's probably best to look for a not too expensive straight-suction canister to do above the floor stuff.

The only thing to remember is which way the belt goes on. Do it in reverse and the belt slips off the shaft and -- you have to start all over again.

I believe that the belts that came with the machine were in deed the correct belt; however I may be wrong. The reason I desided to replace is that the vacuum sounds like the belt was slipping. I just assumed at the risk of assuming that is needed to be replaced. I have never used the tools (although very well designed) because it seemed just too difficult to replace the belt after each use. We do have a Miele for all other jobs. I will try to order to correct belt described in the Hesco ad. Thank you all for the great advise.
