Rarest convertible in the land....

Help Support VacuumLand:

Reminds me of a gold Kirby Tradition I purchased for some very VERY pretty (few tens of thousands of) pennies. When I got it, it was deeply scratched, missing cord hook, reeking of cigarette smoke, and gaskets so dry the Emptor wouldn't attach. At least it had a new (replacement) brushroll and Generation 3-style paper disposable bag.

If I had to pay as much as I did, I can't imagine what one of these in mint condition would be worth!

I don't buy it - the bag was clearly spray painted gold; you can see pink spots on the bag... and the letters were not very well painted on the bag. Clearly a home-made bag. $600 is way too much to pay for that - congratulations to whomever sold it, and to the buyer, who I'm sure is excited about getting this machine. I think maybe I paid $200 for mine about 12 years ago; which I thought was really a lot at the time.

True that it's the rarest of them made - based on numbers alone; there were only 20,000 gold ones made. Although I know of at least 6 or 7 of them that are in people's collections. By contrast, the model 574 (canton red and pearl white), I think is more of a rarity; I only know of maybe 2 or 3 of those around.

I realize they say in the auction that machines in the 1958 advertisements had a gold bag, but I'm not sure if that was actually the case. My 50th Anniversary machine has an off-white bag with gold lettering on it. I've never seen proof other than the ad, which is hanging at the Hoover Historical Center (pictured below), that gold bags actually existed (or a gold hood and bumper for that matter).

Just my 2 cents worth.

The lettering on that poor bag is awful!

Truth...

I had purchased that machine back in 2001, from a small local vac shop (long closed)...that kept it in his window. The hood was melted and cracked almost in half. I did replace it at the time with genuine NOS Hoover equipment, which was notated in the text of the sale. I did not attempt to hide or deceive as has been going around thru the gabbers in the vac world.

As for the condition, it WAS used by a normal human being at some point prior to my purchase. Are their nicer ones? Sure. Fred's is VERY beautiful, as is Jeff Parkers, and Tom Andersons machines, which are the only three I'm aware of. At the time I purchased it, it was serviced with genuine Hoover parts brush-strips, belt, disposable bag etc. Was it abused by ME? Nope, NADA. It sat in a linup with my other Hoovers for 15 years.

As to the outer bag. Regardless of it being spray painted it was done BEFORE I purchased it, and that was clearly notated in the text.. Yes, inside the bag is pink. So it was a 65 bag at some point. HOWEVER, it's the correct STYLE of bag FOR that machine. Other than Freds, and maybe one or two others no one has the correct bag for theirs anyway. Im sure if the future owner (and he was made VERY well aware of his right to return) has issue with my item, he has every right to return it... and I will make good on such things. Considering that I've seen maybe 4 total and one MAYBE on ebay yeons ago, I'm sure the new owner will be satisfied that HE got a Hoover Convertible, Golden Anniversary with modifications.

I never tried to "remove" the paint on the bag or mess with it. How WOULD one right that wrong anyway. I have been told by Hoover experts that they did have variations on the bag. I wont divulge who, but suffice to say it was made pretty clear that modified or not it WAS the style of bag it would have had. That was sufficient for me. I was just pleased to HAVE one... No one mentioned the fact that the bag was such garbage when it was in the display I had with Kyle back in 2008. Nothing I could "hear" anyway. It was verified there that I did in fact have a Golden. After that, it has sat in my collection for years, in a dry basement and was only pulled out when I thought it would be neat to run it for a few to keep it "used"..

I really hope that people can keep in mind that there were MANY pictures taken of the item, and was made very clear it's condition. It's interesting that the person who purchased it wasn't too concerned anyway. He has recourse if he's unsatisfied, and until such time, it'd be great if my item wasn't pretty much trotted out as crap.

Thanks

Chad

Hey Chad,

I personally don't think its a problem, sure it's not 100% original but hey it's still a Golden Anniversary in part.

I'm just gutted I missed the listing as I would have love to have got it ......you set the reserve too low :-)

Please resist if the buyer does not pay.

Complete or not its still part of the Hoover history

Mark

I think the machine looks great! The bag although repainted looks really neat is identical to the color of the base! The couple of tears in the bag in miniscule and for a vacuum of that age I'm surprised the bag isn't torn to bits and having a replacement non-genuine style of some sort. I actually saw a Youtube video of a Hoover Decade 800 that had a Sanitaire commercial bag on it. I know a few collectors that would have a fit if they saw it probably-- John Long!!

So anyway, congrats to the winning bidder, they purchased it witnessed several up close high quality images.

Gorgeous vacuum Chad!!

I think the metallic gold has an elegant quality unlike those who think it garish.

Regarding the variances in the Golden Model 65, I wonder if Hoover initially underestimated their appeal to consumers and only produced a small quantity of the gold bumpers, bags, and motor hoods; then after the fact made an economical decision to produce more "Goldens" using the neutral off-white parts that could be used on the pink 65 if they had leftovers?

Seeing Garry Moore in the ad makes me wonder if some of the Golden Convertibles were given away as prizes on the I'VE GOT A SECRET game show he hosted from '52-'64?

Besides the Electrolux Golden G, 50th Jubilee, and Super J; and golden Kirby Tradition, were there others painted in metallic gold?

-and another GOLD Convertible in TN-

I think it is good to point out the bag repaint as well as the more complete history of this Rare & Great Hoover. If the new owner is happy all should be well with this one.
And now we might continue to learn more.I have found maybe 3 pink 65s over a period of years and only one gold.It was at a vac store that seemed to buy trade ins from DTD dealers.Mine has a replaced cord and generic, but nice, cream colored, replacement bag(still type C).
Does anyone have company newsletters announcing 50th anniversary products?Any literature seen at Hoover Historical? Were the '100' in the ad made and given away as pictured? As for TV Hoover seems to have advertised on NBCs Today in the 50s.Any video existing?
