Rare? Eureka 1470B (ESP)

Here I present one of my favorite vacuum cleaners in my collection... My Eureka 1470B, found at an estate sale. As I am more of a Hoover guy and don't really go for F & G units, I had to get this one as soon as I saw it. It was marked very low, $2.00 with bags! It was kept in great shape and was well worth the price. All it needs is a new lightbulb as of right now. When I got it, it ran perfectly! All there was to fix was the previous owner really made use of the bags and filled it up way over the fill line. I was betting it was the original paper bag in it. All I did was unclogged it and cleaned it up. Needed no service. My friend Chris Szwejk gave me a new handle for it because it had one of the deluxe Eureka handles on it. Who knows why that was on it? If you also look at the pictures, the cord and the bag are still intact and in great condition. I was also wondering if these were rare. I only saw one of these on YouTube (I posted a video of mine) and nothing of them on vacuumland.

That was quite a steal for only $2! Those old Eureka uprights are mighty tough machines, seeing as they are almost identical to the commercial Sanitaire uprights. I don't know how rare they are, probably about as rare as a Hoover Convertible of the same vintage. They were both pretty popular mass market retail machines.

That upright is from 1984…I found a newspaper ad (see link) below in which it was on sale for $75 in honour of Eureka’s 75th anniversary. The 1470 is not an ESP upright with the higher power motor.

The only thing kind of special about it is the unusual bright cherry red colour….not many Eureka Dial-a-Nap uprights had that colour over the years.

why do you only care if something is rare? you ask this often and its getting annoying.

i mainly care because I want to know what is worth something in my collection because they mean something to me.

Hi convertible18,

The only thing that is rare is the bright cherry red colour. Most Dial-a-Naps with the classic Walker hood did not come in that colour - the Walker hoods were usually in beige or cream or white.

What a stunning addition to your collection - way to go! I'd personally name the hood color scarlet. But whatever you call it, it's attractive. Its boldness reminds me of the 1990s Model 1923 "Hot Shot" upright.

Eurekaprince definitely has a "ruling" knowledge of his "Eureka Princedom", and here's an October 18, 1984, newspaper ad that proves it. I also included a photo of the Model 3325 canister also featured in the ad, which appears to match the color of the Model 1470.

You shouldn't care if it is rare. If you like it that is all that matters. Besides rare is relative. You may only see one in your area, and I may see more than one in mine.

These old Eurekas from the 1980's and early 90's operate on the premise of KISS and they do that very nicely.

For whatever reason or another many collectors do not pursue these Eurekas, and Eureka made little amounts of each model number subset, so many do not have it. That is why you are not finding anyone else with one.

You have 1470-B, so this was a second revision to the 1470 model, what was changed, do not know. I believe the dealer/service brochures tell what each change signified somewhere in their diagrams.
