It won't fit correctly. The metal bodied Rainbow D's pan had no 'lip'. The plastic models D3 and D4 pans have a lip that the plastic body fits into. If you use a D4 pan on a model D, you cannot latch the latches - but you can still 'use' it (you just can't pick up the vacuum).
