Rainbow E Series

I found a Rainbow E series machine with just the large hose (no attachments) at the thrift store for $10. I know it powers up but what kind of tests can I run to make sure it is working? I don't want to spend a lot of money refurbishing it & buying new parts if it is not worth it.

For $10.00 you can't go wrong, even if it needs a lot of work. The seller doesn't know what they have. Turn the machine over, with the pan off, and look at the general condition. Unscrew the separator and take it off. There is a little wrench for that purpose in a slot on the underside of the motor, Check out the general appearance. At its age, it's a pretty sure bet that it needs to be cleaned and the HEPA filter replaced, but, again, at $10, you can't go wrong. An authorized Rainbow Service Center will check the machine for you at no cost. To find one, go to www.rainbowsystem.com and click on "distributor locator." There is a business card inside the vacuum (under the clear portion) of the vac shop that the person bought it from. Maybe I will call them and see if they are still there.

Whatever you do, don't let a vac shop, unless they are a factory authorized Rainbow Service Center, touch your machine. There is so much new technology, not found in other vacuums, in the newer Rainbows, that they may very well mess it up. This is why Rexair, Inc. sends Field Service Reps to all their service facilities a couple of times a year, plus sends out numerous service bulletins, both printed, and on DVD to us all the time. I've seen what some of these guys can do to a machine because they didn't know better. They may mean well, and some may be OK, but I'd rather be careful than get burned.
