Rainbow D2 with Eureka Power Nozzle

I finally was able to finish this D2 on Monday night.  Everything was thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.  The rebuild of the motor also included new bearings and motor brushes.  The lower bearing and the bearing plate are no longer available through Rainbow.  However, a search of vacuum parts suppliers on the internet yielded the bearing plate and the lower bearing was purchased through a bearing supplier.  The motor brushes were also upgraded to the newer style found on the D3.  The hose is borrowed from a D3, but it works!

I modified the power nozzle by installing a Eureka VG1 brush roll.  The brush roll in it had that plastic beater bar.  Every time I get one of those, it's all beaten up because people run them on bare floors.  I also had to swap the 3 prong cord for a 2 prong cord.  However, I'm not sure I have that cardboard insulator in the right position.   I also installed new gaskets on the bottom plate.  I don't think that Rainbow belt is correct, but I have some Eureka flat belts on order.

One of the curious things is the holes drilled into the front of the power nozzle.  Does anyone know if they are original to the design?  I'm guessing someone drilled them into the nozzle to increase airflow.  One thing about this D2 model is that its suction might be described as adequate, but its airflow is very strong.  The one drawback to this Eureka power nozzle is how the motor is held on.  It's held on by screws in the top (which are underneath the decal).  So to remove the motor, you have to mess up the decal!

About those holes in that last pic, I don't know really. Maybe Tom Gasko would.

For the 1979 and 1980 editions of the R-1024 power nozzle, the bumper's trim color (and the power cord that runs between the nozzle and the receptacle for it on the cleaner unit) changed from off-white to dark brown to match the rest of the D2's then-new dark brown trim.

Isn't there supposed to be a "slider" type of thing over the vent holes-beleive the vent holes were used for carpets that were entirely glued to the flooring-the vent holes were supposed to be covered for carpets that were "floating" only edge glued or fastened to the floor for "airlift" type cleaning action-the suction of the floor tool pulling through the carpet as it was airlifted-and the roller brush could better vibrate and sweep the carpet.Love the "Primp" your powernozzle!I have a Rainbow powernozzle that has a slider type device that exposes or covers the vent holes.

The rectangular Rainbow designed power nozzle has the slider, but I don't remember seeing one on this Eureka made power nozzle.  I guess if I want to increase suction, I can always put tape across the holes!  LOL!

The power nozzle with my first D2 had the same holes.  I questioned whether they were really necessary but discovered after taping over them that on smooth-surfaced carpeting the nozzle clamped too tightly to the carpet and heavier sand/grit would rattle forever inside the nozzle....there wasn't enough airflow.

Very nice chrome top.The slider came later.All ideas above are right.I would guess that a customer complained that the nozzle was hard to push on certain carpet and the dealer drilled holes.This would also increase airflow as with the 'air breathing' Compact crevice tool with holes.There was a similar idea for Lux PN4.The early has solid bumper and later had small rectangular holes near floor.

The holes I dont think were in all models because I know my D2 does not have those holes thanks. Zach

I like that you put a VG1 brushroll in it. Could that be done with the D3 and D4 rectangular pns?

No to the vg1. That could only be done to the Eureka made nozzle not the later models.
