Rainbow D2 basic questions

Hey all ! Last year I bought a lot of Electrolux cans and accessories from the same seller, he had other makes for sale but I insisted that I was interested in ELux only.

BUT, I couldn't resist when I saw a Rainbow D2 with a hose in fair condition and a lot of accessories, including the ones for carpet cleaning.

This machine is very different from anything else I've came across before, so here are my first questions:

1-there is a small round cover on the side of the dome, i'd like to know what is the black thing with two screws the round hole gives access to?

2-are the motor bearings easily accessible? they sound a bit like they will need to be replaced soon

You are looking through the exhaust opening and seeing the carbon brush holder.

Since you can see the carbon brush holders that means you have the older style motor and not the bypass D3 replacement.

You will have to take off the fan assembly to get to the bearing plate for the upper bearing and take off the separator, flange ring and spider to get to the lower bearing.

You have approximately a 1976 Rainbow and 1990 Power Nozzle, hose, and Aqua-mate. There's no way to plug in a two wire cord from the hose to the three wire power nozzle receptacle unless you have a long-obsolete adapter. Replacing the bearings will be impossible without experienced help OR a ton of time and patience. Knowing what to take off first, then second, and so on comes from experience. I ruined a few Rainbows in my teen years trying to figure them out. Good luck with your project.

If it's a three prong power nozzle it's probably got, neutral and ground. I could tell you how it could work. Instead of suggest finding a power nozzle made for your rainbow. It's a great looking machine. I guessing $50 give or take a few dollars could buy a power nozzle.
I noticed your from Canada eh?!. eBay would be your best bet.
You should go to Rexair Webb site and get a manual. YouTube might have a rainbow teardown video. I'd research and get some knowledge. If you open up the machine you could ruin it easily.

Thank you guys! I've looked on youtube and haven't found any video about D2 repair yet.

There is a Rainbow website I could buy replacement parts from, and I can chat with representatives there too. THey may explain how to change the bearings or send me written instructions with pictures, I don't know, I will ask them.

I'd really like to use this machine on a regular basis on the main floor of my house (no stairs). I like the idea of the water reservoir being used as a filter.

I went to rainvac twice in the last month. They actually were helpful. I got all my rainbow parts from them.
I called them instead of the chat feature. They spoke English, answered my question and didn't try to sale anything.

Sadly not all people that paid out the money for a Rainbow took care of it properly - a lot of them stagnated with water or moisture left in them and it in turn corroded the motor and bearings. I've only seen 2 Rainbows in the real world and I wish I hadn't. They smelled so terrible I nearly puked and one was just totally rust streaks from the motor housing so I could not imagine how bad the bearings were inside.

That is a nice pile of accessory parts though - you could probably sell those and make the money back to get the right parts for the Rainbow unit you have.

That rainbow is in really nice shape cosmetically, that chrome is like new.

Yes, the machine looks great specially because the chrome is in very good shape. THe motor doesn't sound that bad either, the bearings grind a bit, but I've heard some ELuxs that sounded a lot worse...
