I always thought the Ultra MVPs from Dirt Devil were awesome looking machines, but they truly are one of the more elusive vacuums. Why are they hard to find? What year did they start and end selling them?

I know that they were selling during late 90s/early 2000s.
I remember we had a store called Bud's Outlet - which was basically a discount store that Walmart owned. They had a lot of ads during that time with these in them.
I'd say the MVPs are fairly rare, because I usually see more of the Featherlights, and even the older early 90s soft and hard case DDs, than I do these.
There was a model or two also that had a retractable cord, variable speed, and a drawer that stored extra belts and bulbs. I wouldn't mind finding one of those for sure.

I loved mine.
I’d also consider them rare because the design flaws made this a model that Dirt Devil didn’t reincarnate too many times. Also, it was a very heavy machine. The bag fill design was troublesome and there was a suction diverter lever that didn’t always work. It was supposed to make the suction available through the stretch hose when the machine handle was locked in the upright position. I liked this upright because when everything on mine worked, it worked very well. I had mine in 1996. I bought it from a thrift store for $10 with a package of bags and it didn’t have a scratch on it.

Love mine
I was lucky enough to get one NIB a year ago. Impressive airflow due to the huge dirt tube that leads right to the bag. The nozzle could sit a lit more flat on the carpet, it seems to barely touch due to the angle they designed. As others have said it’s heavy, kinda short for me to use as well. All in all one of the last good DD bagged vacs before they went to China . Also very quiet for a single stage motor.
