When was this Royal 880 manufactured that I picked up this afternoon? Found it in a thrift store for $19.95, it had a Royal genuine bag and belt in it. The owner really took care of it except for a frayed spot on the cord and a few scratches.

Serial # looks like G86F087614 so that would mean it was made in July 1986.

Or he knows his Royals very well! I've been looking for one of these for quite awhile. Until I have an attachment kit for an 880 I’ve devised a solution. I used an Electrolux hose off an old Genesis upright I had and it worked. The hose suction isn’t bad compared to some of my other uprights.

Some of you may cringe at the thought of this monstrosity. The metal fan may tear up the rubber on the end of the Elux hose. But it's a temporary solution. The Royal reminds of Kirby in so many ways. I do think Kirby had a better height adjustment system. The height adjustment knob at the rear is kind of awkward. But overall it seems light and easy to use. I’m glad to have one in my collection.

The real attachment set that you want is part #305. However, at the time of original production, these attachments were light blue if you stated them in the order invoice along with the vacuum itself. Otherwise, they'd be grey in color (as today).
When this cleaner, the model 880, was replaced by models 886 and 887 in early 1987, the 886 was just the vacuum itself, while 887 also had the attachment kit included (light blue attachments).

Rite-Hite Height Adjuster Knob

I also want to say how the Rite-Hite height adjustment system works: you keep twisting the knob clockwise to lower the nozzle (counterclockwise to raise it), just enough so that the Adjust-O-Rite stub goes in toward the motor, to indicate the nozzle is at the correct height.
Models 992 and 993 (the dark blue ones), and the burgundy 9000, all of which were introduced in early 1988 (and all of which initially had the white cord), have the "Au-Toe-Matic" foot-operated height adjustment. The lower pedal is used to lower the nozzle; the higher one is used to raise the nozzle.

My brush roll has brush stiffeners on it, probably a replacement. It really vibrates the carpet more so than other vacuum I own. Unfortunately, it really puts my Convertibles to shame. The vibration from the brush roll can be felt several inches from the machine. It really makes dirt, sand and grit bounce on the top of the carpet. It's a great cleaner. Compared the Royal with my Kenmore canister and the PowerMate also vibrates well (2 brush 1 beater combination). Not much else can compare. I haven't compared it to my Kirby G5 yet. Since the 880 was top-of-the-line back in 1986, the brush roll probably was the double-bristled one to begin with, so in your case it may be the original one, but like any brush roll it may still be replaced regardless.
