Question about Hoover Decade 80 Brush Roll

HI guys, I have a Hoover Decade 80. I gave up on it a few years ago because it was noisy and kept eating belts in a matter of hours. With out the belt the motor is very quiet, but as soon as I put the belt on its noisy and the belts don't last very long at all, like a day or 2. I had the bearings replaced in the brush at the local vacuum shop and that didn't help either. So I want to replace the brush and see if maybe there is something wrong with mine. Are the brush rolls from a convertible the same?

Are you using genuine hoover belts? and are you sure the belt is on the right way? The brush IS the same in the convertible, but it will depend on what model it is from. for example, if you take one from an early model convertible, it might not work in a decade 80. 70's and later convertibles have the same brushroll as do hoover gaurdsman vacuums. under the hood, the convertible and the decade are practically the same. the only difference is the fan chamber.

Check to make sure the brush roll is not bent/bowed slightly in the center. A bent brush roll will vibrate the machine, make lots of noise, and could even destroy belts by making them contact the bottom plate and/or the cleaner base.

Unplug the machine. Take the belt off. Re-install the brush roll. Spin it by hand and look at the gap between the middle of the brush roll and the rib in the middle of the bottom plate. Does the gap change significantly as the brush spins? If so, the roller is likely bent and will need replacement.

A Convertible roller body should be able to replace your roller body if it is bent. You can replace it but keep your original end caps, new bearings, and brush strips if you want. Thankfully, such a repair is very straightforward.

Never use aftermarket or incorrect belts in any vacuum which requires round belts. I have found both Hoovers and Eurekas/Sanitaires which use round belts are prone to getting their roller bodies bowed by belts which have too much tension

I used a new old stock Hoover convertible belt, and an aftermarket set of 2 belts from Walmart. I agree with you guys the brush maybe bowed, I will try to check again tomorrow. I'm not sure what the previous owner did but the fan was destroyed when I found the vacuum. So maybe they damaged the brush at the same time. I saw some plastic ones on ebay and amazon for around $20.. I know they're not as nice as the metal one on mine currently, but are they any good?

I went down stairs to look at the vacuum today, and I spun the brush. I noticed the belt gets close an almost touches the body of the vacuum during rotation then has a lot of clearance. But its also been sitting for a few years so Im not sure if the belt is just misshapen... I also noticed that the metal cover has spots where it looks like the belt is hitting. Im wondering if someone dropped it and bent the cover. I found a cover for a convertible on Ebay Im not sure if it will fit though. Here is a few pictures of everything tell me what you guys think.

I had the same problem and greased the bearings etc. Finally I just bought a CWP Convertible brush roll with 4 rows of brushes. Solved the problem and grooms the carpet very well.

Thanks Bud, What does CWP stand for I may just buy that tonight?

It stands for Cleveland Wood Products. It will be a black, wooden brushroll with red tufted Bristles. I recommend using the Genuine Hoover 44783 belt with it, as it replaced the Convertible 49258 belt. I use that belt with hat brushroll in my Decade 80...its a real great cleaner with it!
