Question about a Hoover Vacuum model 28

Hi guys this is my first post on the forum, I would like to say hi to all. This vacuum started it all for me. Not only was it my first vintage vacuum, but this Hoover started my fascination of these old machines. The story behind this one, I found it a year ago at a goodwill for $10. It was the first antique vacuum I had ever seen in person. It works like a charm as well. The bag is in mint condition, as well as the power cord. The on/off switch does not work (I plan on fixing) so I just plug it in when used. I have not gone through it yet. I still need to read up on the mechanics and such. I have cleaned the inside of the bag though.

My question to you all is, what year is this one? I have guessed early 40's, if anybody can specify more information to this model that would be great. I am still very new to vacuums and the companies who produced them.

The serial number is: 2773829

Also there is a marker stamp on the left underside, it reads JUL 00 1957, could this be a service date?

I will have many more questions, thanks for your answers.

That stamp is a service stamp.

These were made in the 40's. There was a big as campaign for after the war was over.. "The Finest HOOVER Ever Built".There are photos of the last of them coming off the line before war production. I don't have the actual dates, but, I know others do. GREAT machine!

ive heard in the past they were made around 1946 through about 1950. in the beginning there was the triple action 28, the mole 115 Junior (aka apt half sized lower line upright), and the Model 51 Aero-Dyne tank. the first 28's were made with metal painted hoods, then due to the war effort the hood was switch to bakealite. then when the brown model 61 (brown square hood, and with the new "Handi-Sack" reuseable throw away bag)was introduced. the 28 was used as the lowline shake bag machine right before it was disconinued and the Hoover upright got a facelife when the red model 29 and the blue 62 showed up....

When these models came in, I beliece, the 28 was made as a 'commercial' for a bit. Here are the 2 different bags.

the new models that replaced the brown line. the machine in this ad is the model 29, the 62 had the same base ,hood, and handle. but was blue with a blue Hani-Sack bag, and a light brown base...

Could I get down to a specific year with the serial number and a database? Also do you guys think the bag is original? If not what era? And I have seen a few of these 28s in different colors, did this "brown line of model 28's" come out last before they were discontinued? Thanks

You gotta love a 28

I'm not sure how to determine the date of manufacture from the serial number on these vacs but there are people here who do.  (Will someone in-the-know please chime in?)  The bag on yours Jon is a replacement but looks to be in very good condition.  There are lots of bags like yours out there since older Hoovers got used decade after decade and the originals often wore out, especially around the collar at the bottom.  John's (gottahaveahoover) picture of his 28s show the two styles of bags that came with these vacs originally.  The 28 was always brown but the 305 looked identical and was black/grey in color.

Jon- See Thread #13491 Hoover List posted by Marty Kaplan...this list is from the Hoover Company circa 1960 and shows the years of production for the model 28 as 1946-50 and serial numbers 2,379,001 thru 4,657,595 for this machine. That's a lot of Hoovers!

Well thanks guys,
Thank you for the information. I wish the bag was original since everything else is, but I will not change it for the sake of the vacuum and it is my first vintage that started me in the hobby. According to the list the model 28 was produced in 1947, cool. That solves the era mystery I was trying to solve. And it would seem it was serviced 10 years later

I do know the on off switch is broken, I might try to rebuild it if possible, any ideas? Also does anybody know a place on the web that sells original vintage parts or bags?

Hoover 28

Hi Jon, welcome to the forum! Where in Ohio are you? I'm in Galion, about halfway between Mansfield and Marion.
Can't add anything to what others have already said here, but the 28 is one of my favorite Hoovers too! Love the way it looks, sounds, and cleans!

A most elegant cleaner

And a stellar example of the streamlining trend of 1940s industrial design. Years ago, I remember seeing one used as a commercial cleaner in one of the stores in a shopping mall near my home. What I found particularly striking were the decorative gold bands on both sides of the motor housing, which added a touch of elegance to Hoover's midpriced upright model.
