Younger aged people are getting cocky because they tend to think they are infallible in general. (Gee, I've never thought that way. nope)
But hey, if the illegal drugs, unprotected sex, alcoholism, and generally stupid stunts don't rid us of these morons, there's always a good unpredictable pandemic to render them a liability.
As far as proper masks. I've heard the argument that HEPA vacuum bags, or really any vacuum bags, shouldn't be cut up and used for a mask.
First, a 'home made' mask that is religiously worn when in the midst of the general population is better than NO Mask at all. I think the HEPA is probably a better filter material compared to a paper mask, though a piece of vacuum bag with rubber bands used to hold it on is missing the elastic gathers on the edges and around the nose.
Second, I've heard people say that HEPA vac bags aren't good because they weren't made for direct contact. I'd argue against that because where in fact are portable vac bags venting? They are inside and people are breathing what comes out of vacuum bag regardless of if it's HEPA. Also, there is a lot more air flow when a vacuum is running vs. when a person is breathing through it.
Third, we can't expect these to be perfect. Even a proper respirator is not guaranteed to filter out a pesky air-borne virus. These are just paper clumsily applied to our faces. The main benefit is in providing some direct barrier to our intake and exhaust of air.
It's the equivalence of a vestibule or enclosed porch on our house. Its a protection from rain, snow, heavy wind, and significant heat loss. But it isn't perfect.
Fourth, don't assume everyone you see in public who isn't wearing protection is a defiant p.o.s. who doesn't care about his or other's health or that they are a mas(k)ochist (see what I did there, lol). Some literally don't have resources to buy or make protection. Some have not been educated to what's going on.
