Problems with my 1980's Hoover Convertible

Hey, I have 2 problems with my 1980's Hoover Custom Convertible model U4395. the first issue is that now the end cap (it's the thing that fits into the slots of the brush roll area) that goes on the right side of the brush roll seems to not want to stay on. this has been happening since earlier this year in 2013, and it occurs when I take out the brush and the right end cap stays in its slot and a compression washer just falls out meaning that I have to put the washer back in and screw the end cap back on (that is once it's out of the slot it goes into in the brush roll area of the vacuum. I've tried putting the washer in and screwing the end cap back on, but it would either not want to go back on or stay in place for a few seconds and then pop off. it took me SEVERAL attempts before I FINALLY got the brush end cap back on the shaft. the only solution that seems to work is if I take one of the compression washers out of the right side of the brush roll, the right end cap goes on fine with no trouble. if it helps to know the brush roll i'm using, the brush roll I use is the original brush roll with 2 brush strips and 2 beater bars (known to some as the it beats as it sweeps as it cleans brush roll). The second problem is that the clips that hold the base plate in place seem to either come off the base plate a little or come off the based plate completely causing the base plate to come off during use. Anyone know how to fix this? I've tried tightening the screw that holds the clips in place, but that just seems to work only for at least a few uses before the screws loosen and the clips just shift on me during usage. If it helps to know the base plate I'm using, I am using the original metal base plate. can anyone help me out here. you don't have to own the hoover model u4395 to help me out, if you own a different 80' hoover convertible, you would most likely be able to help me out as the base on all 80's hoovers I think are the same. any and all help would be appreciated. thanks.

First off, We'll have to figure out an explanation for the problem before we can discover a solution, And really, I'm not too sure on what could be causing such a thing, I've never heard of such an event happening. Perhaps something is causing Excesse vibration?

You've really sparked an idea there super-sweeper! kudos to you for that! excess vibration, I've never really thought about that one! I'll have to look into that one, from what I can remember, the vibration seems really normal to me. I don't really know what could be causing excess vibration! thanks super-sweeper for figuring that out!

Try flipping the brushroll, meaning put the current right side of the brush on the left side of the base. It may be unscrewing because the brush is in "backwards", and is spinning the wrong way. This happened to me in my decade 80. I would pull the brushroll out and the endcap was pretty well unscrewed all the way. I screwed it back on and flipped the brushroll, and I never had that problem again.

Give this a try and let me know how you make out. This fixed it for me.. not sure if it will help or not for your situation.

Just checked for excessive vibration

Super-sweeper, I looked into the possibility excessive vibration, here is wha I did and observed:

I ran the machine a few times and checked for any excess vibration, there is no excess vibration, all vibration is normal. I did a run with no belt, I can feel vibration in the handle, but that is normal as the motor rides directly on top of the base and the carry handle (handle bail) is directly connected to the base. therefore, it makes sense that there is vibration in the handle when I run the motor with or without a belt. I took off the hood to run the motor and make sure it is not shaking, and it was not shaking at all. i checked to make sure every screw that fastens the motor to the base was tight, and they were. I alo checked the top of the motor to make sure the bearing was secure, and i only needed to tighten 1 screw. I then ran the motor again (with no belt), and there is still the same amount of vibration as there was before i tightened the bearing. I ran the machine with a belt, adjusted the height, and vacuumed with the machine only to find out that the amount of vibration was normal; however, I noticed that one of the clips was almost off the base plate. so I put the clip back on the baseplate, ran the machine again, adjusted the height, and vacuumed with the hoover; and the base plate clip didn't shift, which has stumped me as to how that is possible. I'm still having the issue of the end cap popping off the brush roll when I take the agitator out.

flipping the brush

I just tried flipping the brush. even though when i vacuumed with the hoover, the clips didn't shift, the clips occasionally shift on me and flipping the brush caused the brush to make what sounded like a ratcheting sound when the nozzle isn't contacting the carpet and not a roaring/growling/purring sound like it is supposed to when the nozzle isn't contacting the carpet, and I'm still having trouble with the one end cap. but thanks anyways, that was a very creative idea you had there!

It sounds like

Your brushroll is incorrectly assembled, The compression washers go in between the roll caps that are tightly fitted to the roll and the bearings, then the endcaps are screwed to the rod ends, screw them tightly in opposite directions. Also for your clips, just bend them slightly towards the bottom of the cleaner and they should hold fast. Hope that helps.
