Private Label Royal Metal Uprights

Ben,

The Imperial Prestige was not sold by Electro-Hygiene dealerships. Remember, I used to sell Electro-Hygiene, and if we ever sold the Imperial Prestige I would have seen at least one at one time or another. We did however, sell the Galaxie Prestige. I'm thinking possibly the Imperial Prestige might have been private labeled for a janitorial products company, as was the Hild.
Charlie, I also remember hearing about Royal making vacs for Macy, although I never saw one in person. Did Macy's have the full lineup of uprights, tanks, canisters, & hand vacs?

In a YouTube video I recently watched, there was a "Jason" brand upright vacuum cleaner, which looked exactly like one of the older Royal revolving brush uprights. Any idea who sold that cleaner?

The video is listed as "the JASON vac"

Interesting Video!

The Jason vac looks and sounds like an early post-war Royal, such as a 189 or 215, made when the company was still the P.A. Geier Co. I have both of these models in my collection. Here's my 189.

I'm going to look at this vacuum tomorrow, the woman listing it told me it was a "285 from 1974", so I'm guessing this is the Electro-Hygiene equivalent model number. She had listed it as a Kirby, so I'm not entirely sure where she is getting the details once I had asked her for a model number. Perhaps she decoded the serial number once she discovered the tag on the bottom?

Anyways, the colors are not the red of Electro-Hygienes posted here, and I don't recall seeing Royals in teal blue... Is this a third party brand that Royal was OEM contractor for?

I'm not a collector, I just detest plastic vacuums, and want to make sure I can order the right belts, bags, and rollers to keep it working for years to come.

285

Since it's a model 285 I am pretty sure it is an Electro-Hygiene. And yes, I have seen that shade of blue on early to mid 60's versions of the 285, so it might in fact be older than what she said. If that is the case the printing would be similar to the earlier 285 shown above with the shakeout bag. Or it might be a replacement bag. Also, the bag is on backwards. Zipper should be facing the rear and printing should be in front. Royal type A bags are what you'll need for it, but if you can't find them, Eureka F & G bags are plentiful and work well. Most Royals and Electro-Hygienes use the same brush roll, just make sure you get one with square ends. The brush rolls with the hexagon ends only fit later models such as those built in the 90's.
When you go to look at it, the data plate with model, serial, etc. will be on the bottom of the motor housing on older models and later models will have the info on a sticker on the back side of the nozzle. Be sure to ask if they have the rest of the attachments--there should be a dust brush, upholstery nozzle, and crevice tool with it as well. The hose is definitely a replacement. Hope this helps, and good luck with the deal.
