Or at least very much like it, manufactured by Pheonix of all people. My uncle and aunt had one, possibly as a wedding present in 1957, and I managed to get one in early 2009. The machine appears to have been manufactured here as the tools appear to be similar to other Pheonix models, in other words not very good, unlike their US counterparts. But the cleaner itself dispays the same beautiful line as the Universal - the nearest equivalent being the one on the rear left of Rick's picture above.

Rick, what were the production dates for these cleaners please?

Ah, so there was a Phoenix version then..

I have a couple of Phoenix Popular machines, a red and a green one. The hoses are black and cloth-covered.

Actually a Major (Brick Red) and a Popular (Blue) - which are probably my least favourite in the collection. I have also seen them badged as Gamages (I think). About the most distinctive feature was the flex connector with the Pheonix on it. Apparently they had fabric covered flex (like an iron) the match the hose - at least one of mine does ...... Horrible tools too, the floor nozzles not even swivelling - they are like early Lux nozzles - fair enough in 1920s but not in the 1950s It was a real surprise to see the Universal clone made by them although apparently from a 1963 Ideal Home article I have they had several models on the go then, the last gasp I think as this is more or less the last I heard of them

There have been one or two of those Phoenix machines on Ebay recently but I didn't bother with them. IIRC, one of these was a blue one.

I wouldn't have minded having them..but I've just got so much stuff..and now that Universal has come I've just been given another warning about Hoovers...

I've actually got about six "parts machines" of the VC6702 (the blue ribbon one), and I've got one 2/3 complete VC6700 (E65 before WWII). It never hurts to have another. That way I could build one more complete machine. That's the fun of the hobby for me, fixing up "beyond hope" machines to as close as new that I can. I don't really plan on keeping two of any machine, so when I get more than one, I would like to make them a gift to someone once restored. I haven't refinished a machine in over two years, and they are piling up! Gotta get back into it......SOON!
