as I lifted her out of the box. She had come home. She wears the battle scars of sixty-nine years of dependable service to her owners.

She knew when she left New Britain that she would be able to perform her tasks as needed, as long as she was needed. Hers was never to be a glamorous life. No one would be clamoring to take her picture, she wouldn't be the life of the party, nor even included at family gatherings. She was Cinderella. Relegated to the storage closet until AFTER the party, she was supposed to clean up and nothing more. Oh sure when she was new, she was bragged on by the lady of the house - even showed off to the neighbors. As time went by, those visits became fewer and fewer. Day after day, week after week, months, years.....time it seemed was flying by. She hadn't realised she was old now. No one dusted her off before she slipped back into the closet. She had suffered trips down the stairs, had fallen over onto the door threshold more than once, and she was no longer beautiful. Finally the day came when her "replacement" showed up. Some fancy plastic thing. She watched in horror as the new girl took her place. It had been a generation, but times didn't change all that much. Folks showed up to see the new girl as she was shown proudly to the neighbors. She spent her remaining years in the garage.......waiting.

Her owners were long gone now. The kids are selling the house. Whats to become of her now? She still has life in her. A little less agile, a little noisier, but she could still do a good day's work. She can still keep up with the best of them. She wondered what was happening as the wrapping was placed around her and the lid to the box closed. Then there was silence. Darkness. This was her fate, and no one cared.

She was awakened by a sudden burst of light as the lid to the box ripped open. Lifted from the container by warm caring hands, she let out a small muffled cry. She could see others in the room just like her, all shined up and on display for all to see! Could this be a dream? Is it real? Someone cares?

She couldn't believe what was happening as she felt a slight tug on her cord. She felt like a youngster again as she could feel electricity surging through her wires. Her heart raced as she breathed the air that was again coursing through her. She was alive....she was home.

Had to wipe a tear or two from my eye as I read the opening post, Rick. Beautifully written.

Well worth the $9.99. If I had bid on & won this the shipping quote to Canada would have been $65.

Frankly, no matter how grotty, we can be thankful for sellers who put such 'hopeless' cases on auctions sites. Imagine how many simply get sent to the crusher. Sure, rusted, worn and dented but all parts accounted for (other than the switch and jewel light) all reversible in the right hands...and if not, a valuable parts donor.

Another diamond in the rough. never turn away these orphans.
I have a 3rd blue 'Boots Boy' Monitor cylinder, picked up for $5, missing it's side trim strips but otherwise excellent paint and medallion. It and a gray Kingston missing it's motor and bag will be returned to service after a few cross platform organ transplants.

Another hammertone blue we could use...

I'm Counting On You Rick!!

Yes, she's home now, and if anyone can restore her to her original beauty, that would be you!! Loved your story and description, too!

I would like to thank the Academy for this Oscar for best screen-play in a vacu-drama. I would also like to thank all the little people I've stepped on on the way to the top. You mean nothing to me now, but when I needed you, you were there. I would also like to thank the blue vacuum cleaner. Without you there would have been no story. Thanks to my Mom, who encouraged me to be a writer instead of learning to play the Xylophone, cause who the Hell cares about those anyway, and...

(is that walk-off music playing)?

Well, haven't I always said.....

you should be a writer??? What a fun story. I have no doubt that she will one day be as beautiful as she was when she left the factory in New Britain, CT!!!

You should be a writer

I get so mad when I see how some people abuse there appliances, but then that is half the fun, taking something considered useless and old and bringing it back to its earlier glory, when I see a vacuum like this I wonder just how much it has seen in its lifetime,if they could talk wouldnt that be something!

Oh Rick -

I've just filled my second hanky with tears. Poor Lil Blue thing. Can we have a step-by-step rebuild post? I've always wondered how you get dents out of these old gals, and how you get the parts and missing pieces. Can't wait!
