I saw on Pinterest that somebody made a floor lamp out of a DS50. I thought it was kinda cool and a very creative use of an old vacuum cleaner.

This did get me thinking though....

I may build a nice wood platform a few inches high, run a brass pipe up from the rear to a series of fittings or bends with a lamp socket and shade... then I have a very nice lighted display for an upright (my future DS50??), a nice general purpose room light and the displayed vacuum is right there ready to go to work!

I think that's a great way to use a cleaner that is defective--particularly in the case of the motor. The real genius, of course, would be to figure out a way to attach the lamp so it could be easily detached and still be used for cleaning if it weren't defective.

A canister could be set on its back end, fitted with a glass that would fit snugly in the hose inlet, and used as a flower vase or a small tv lamp (just saw one in a resale shop) could be fit into the hose inlet. There's all sorts of possibilities!

being a collector who repairs, services, and restores machines i collect, there is no such thing as a "bad motor". that being said, the lamp is tasteful (tho the shade should've been from an era appropriate lamp) john long once showed a 1070 convertible lamp with the headlight the was on when the lamp turned on. that would be a winner touch with this machine plus a better lamp shade. i'm all for saving and restoring as many machines as a i can that i like visually, but repurposing them and being appreciated is better than rotting away in the dump or being recycled at a scrapper.

Lighted display

I really like gr8danedad's idea for an elevated platform with a lamp coming up from the back. That way you could display different vacuums

I think I'm going to build one now that I've acquired a D50. Maybe even wire in a auto switching relay to power the hood light without powering up the motor... hmmm. I'd love to have that lighted Kirby logo visible when it's on display.

Tom

I also like the lighted platform where you display a favorite machine-that way you can still use it.Or--the conversion to a light would be something you would do to a vacuum that you HATE-"This makes a better LIGHT fixture than a vacuum cleaner!"

if the coat hooks weren't on it, I kinda like the Hoover hanging lamp.... but I'd have to have a part that had no hope of being used in a functioning vacuum again.

If they had the hooks right side up then it would be better..not much...what are the hooks for??? Is it a lamp or coat rack??? And that tradition...is that what happens after a bad acid trip??? I'm sorry but I could do that to a vacuum...if it didn't work, I would just park it like it was & dust it off & just enjoy it like it's supposed to be while trying to find parts to get it running. I know with this post I'll get jumped again for posting my opinion but doesn't bother me

'respond to me thru private massaging'

That is a typo, right?

I could never do THAT to  a Kirby, but you've got to love the people who think to strike-it-rich over blindly gluing a Perculator upon a Kirby!

Alex,

What are you telling me, you don't want to buy my Kirby lamp. And could you imagine paying for shipping and handling charges on that giant vacuum cleaner...Wow, what a free gift!
