I was wondering if the Universal was a pre-Compact machine somewhere in history? The look is simular, and the design is very simular.

to the Compact. Maybe closer to the Air-Storm (I think...)? Love to know some history.

Had one of the Jet 99 machines given to me in high school. I don't believe there is any relationship between the Compact and the Jet 99 although there are design similarities. If you want to see a pristine Jet 99 and the original sales display, visit Duane Taylor at his vacuum store. I ran his this summer. A beaut!

Another classic Icon of superb vacuum design and engineering that set the bar for competitors to reach for.

These are Davy's damn DAMs. I got the Poppy Red one from Pete this weekend; I have coveted it for ever so long...thank you, Pete.

There's something so upscale & flashy about the matching Poppy Red bumper strip.

Even the bag cover is Red.

The DAM Self-Propelled is a brilliant evolution of the design with a headlight, at last.

The suction through the Tools setting is a decent 40" on all 4 and with careful analysis & metal bending, all my handles are snug, taut and wriggle-free as the day they were installed.

My question:
What year did Hoover change the DAM's intake control from round to hook handle, as shown on the Pumpkin second from left?

Dial-A-Matic suction control

The changeover came in 1969 with the Dial-A-Matic 1170. It was the first with automatic power drive, and the first with a round dial. The dial was again changed in 1972 during the production run of the 1149, and a little metal lip was installed on the inside which prevented you from turning the suction control dial with the hose inserted.

Very interesting, Karl; I like learning things I didn't know I don't know. So, I have quite an assortment with my few DAMs. So now I can arrange them by date?

The Pumpkin Orange one with hose & tools is a Model 1120.
The Blue one is Model 1148 with the round dial.
The Power Drive is Model 1176 with round dial.
The Poppy Red one is Model U5009 and has the metal lip disc.

I can't give an exact date on the 1148 and U5009 since they're Canadian models, but the order definitely seems correct. The 1120 was Hoover's unofficial 60th anniversary model of 1968. I love the poppy U5009, we only had the poppy model here in the states as a power drive model (U6003). Personally, I prefer the non power drive models, they're a little less clunky.

Saturday's POD

I think it's a great ad, so simple, the cleaner looks sleek and inviting. Why is the first Dial-A-Matic in Dave's picture so much bigger than the others?

Alan, that's a self-propelled Dial-A-Matic with Automatic Power Drive.

The base is 3/4" wider and 1/2 taller, and the bag compartment front is slightly re-styled. Otherwise they share all parts near as I can tell.

Oooo, I'd like to get the USA Poppy Red Power Drive model.

The bottoms. See the bumper strip goes all around the base.

Oh yes, on the self-propelled model the rear wheels adjust to the carpet height, rather than the front rollers on the regular DAM.

Karl, I agree the Power Drives are clunkier. Both are heavy cast metal base machines but not that much heavier considering the additional technology and the drive takes care of that little problem. Of course, I like gadgetry so that robust little transmission gives me goose bumps, it's so effective and fun to operate.
The Power Drive is really the only reason I keep a few later plastic body Hoover self-propelled uprights from the 80s - they are much noisier.
