Pictorial thread of Hoover UK's Turbo models (turbopower etc)

The bag door available as a conversion pack was indeed a different colour from the rest of the cleaner, at least the ones I saw were. I have never seen the likes of your cleaner before, Paul. Perhaps they started out in grey and Hoover found it uneconomical to use this colour. I rated Hoover 10 out of 10 for bare-faced cheek when it came to their idea of a suitable modification for the problems the Freedom suffered. People worked hard and paid good money for a cleaner which had a specific feature, and indeed paid a good deal more for it than the standard Turbomaster bagged cleaner. To have it converted to paper bags was disgusting I thought. The very least Hoover could have done was carry out the conversion and then refund an amount of money equal to the price difference between the U5094 and the U5132.

Hi Benny
The impression that myself and Rob both got was that the conversion that we acquired was a bit one-offish. It will be interesting to see whather anyone has seen a colour co-ordintaed conversion elsewhere, or whether they were all a generic replacement black.

Totally agree with your sentiments re:converted Freedoms. To pay the extra for a flawed machine - a) I would have been generally miffed .... then b) annoyed to have my cleaner modified to place it somewhere between the top of the standard range and the next model down ..... and finally c) livid not to recieve the difference in the form of a refund.

They really got their fingers burnt with the Freedoms and its perhaps surprising that they have surfaced, particularly the Turbopower Feedom, with a fair regularity on ebay.

Paul

Yes, the Turbopower convertion would have been much more difficult. As well as the T plate needing to be changed to one with hinges, there was the new bag door, and, if my memory is correct, the screw holes for the duct in the back of the bag door were in the wrong place to accomodate the standard Turbopower duct. Exactly how Hoover convereted the Turbopower models, I am not sure.

Thats your lot for the moment!

The Turbo2's, 1000's and 3's will have to wait till another thread, as I need a bit more time to process photos of them and, by the time thats completed, this thread will have fallen off the bottom of the forum.

Hopefully this thread and its photos will provide a useful resource for people and, whilst the thread is still live, if anyone finds or sees photos of mystery machines then please add them.

Cheers
Paul

Hi Benny.

I meant to ask that question - whether you or anyone knew of Turbopower freedom conversions?

The black generic blank replacement doors were intended for the entire range then and werent part of a Freedom conversion kit?

Paul

Hello Paul. I had very little to do with either Freedom cleaner as few ever came my way for repair. The one which stands out is a Turbopower Freedom which came in for a new rear bag unit as the original had snapped. I used to stock these in black, but I am sure there was a problem with the screws which held the duct in place being in a different position from the normal Turbopower. I see you have one of these cleaners and I wondered if you were able to look and see?

As it was, I am sure I had to order the exact bag unit for my customer as she was still using her cleaner bagless. I cannot tell you what Hoover's answer was to remedy the Turbopower Freedom problem with dust leakage.

Thinking about the bag unit, if I am right about the screw positions, this meant yet another moulding was in existence. As it was, there were two variations of the black bag housing, one for standard cleaners and one for autoflex which had an additional screw hole. Quite why Hoover fitted all the other mouldings needed for the autoflex corwinder to all bag units and yet not include the screw hole to secure the winder cover is something of a mystery. As well as these, there was a bag housing with the on/off switch hole in the place where the flex winder button would have been, and another where the on/off switch hole was in the place where teh bag full lamp would have been. All of these have been shown in your photographs, albeit in the original colours.

Hoover sold refurbishment kits for Turbopower machines, which consisted of bag housing front & back, handle, unprinted motor hood, plus a handful of other parts. The idea was that a broken machine could be brought back to life, or else a whole new machine built using an existing chassis & motor and whatever other parts were not included in the pack. Black became the obvious choice for major spares, because as your photographs show, there were a good deal of colours made!

Turbopower U2662 Freedom

I once fitted a paper bag conversion kit to a U2662 Turbopower Freedom. From memory, it included changing the bag door, back box and lower cover plate.

my tubo freedom

i love my turbopower freedom despite its flaws but i have to say in my house it does seem to work quite well i did use it for a while with the tplate, bag door, and fill tube off a u2332 but i didnt screw the fill tube in place because of the positioning of the screwholes also the bag door would sometimes pop open i have a video of it somewhere ill try and put it on but in the meantime here my turbo freedom as it should be

Another mystery machine has popped up - found on eBay and bought by Steve over on The Broom Cupboard.

This one is a U2792, dated November 1991. I can't find any info about it in the catalogues or brochures, but I suspect this may have been a higher end non-Total System that sat between the entry level <span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">hardbag U2724 and the entry total system U2798.

Ya know Alex, I had a moment earlier on where I thought "maybe I was being too harsh, maybe I was over reacting, maybe I should get over it". And I unblocked you.

And in 6 words, you've reminded me exactly why I blocked you in the first place. I mean, here is a thread that has taken a long time to put together, not to mention the YEARS of collecting it's taken to get this information together. And we're clearly still finding new information about different models, which is amazing for 20+ year old vacuums.

And what do you have to say? No "this is great, thank you" or "what a great resource for us all!" Oh no. You butt in with your stinking, thoughtless attitude and completely live up to your Negative Nancy nickname.

*BLOCK*

Arsehole.

Chris, I am sorry you can't get a long with me anymore. Ovbiously you can't handle my facetious attitude, well that is just who I am and have always been, you did find it funny at one time.

I don't know what happened.

Alex.
