I just noticed with my cat, his ear seems to relate with mine! I got out a new Bissel powerforce that was donated, clean , service ready to give to a needy owner. All good and clean, turned it on to test it out and vacuum a small area. HE was GONE! Kirby he has adjusted to, Silerado and Miele no problem. I guess the pitch of that little screamer was uncomfortable? The Dc 18 he is also ok with, but not the handheld Dyson. Pitch again?

Many vacuums today have that screaming pitch, not the lower sound of motors of the past. The reason is that smaller motors are being used, and so they must turn faster to produce the same performance. Also, most are only one stage meaning they have one fan, so again they must spin faster to have decent performance.

Well I wouldn't just say the type of fan has changed- most brands are not putting in added sound insulation, so its noise all the way.

My cat typically leaves the room hurriedly when a vacuum cleaner starts up, especially one of my Kirbys, and then comes back to watch discretely from the doorway. However, her reaction to my newly acquired Electrolux Discovery Plus is quite different. She jumps up onto the nearest accessible piece of furniture and watches from what she apparently feels is a safe height above floor level. Then, the instant it's shut off, she jumps down and goes over to investigate. I find this interesting because she doesn't react this way to either of my Electrolux canisters, which are both quieter than the Discovery. At one point yesterday, she was actually chasing the cord while I was vacuuming on the other side of the room. She'll do this when I'm winding up the cord on a Kirby but the automatic cord winders on the Electrolux canisters scare her because the cord moves too fast.

Is terrified of the vacuum...if its running, turn it off and She will lay down beside it!!LOL, My little dog I had 15 years LOVED to be vacuumed, She would let me run the open hose up and down her back and even her tail.

Old new big and small my 10 month old German shepherd hates em all!! Lol cat stays curious from a distance.

Interesting!!

I've used many Bissell PowerForce style units and never found those terribly loud. They have a deeper sound when the brush roll is on the floor.

The pitch may be slightly high on those models but definitely lower and deeper than Sharks and many of the Eurekas coming out.

In terms of noise decibel they are dramatically quieter than 1990's Eureka Bravo/ Powerline style uprights. Also tremendously quieter than many Dirt Devils such as the bagless Vision Turbo, WideGlide, and Jaguar series as examples.

It's debatable whether a Hoover Elite is louder than the Bissell. I've never had the opportunity to run one near a Bissell to compare.
