suction relief and Perfect bags

I use the Perfect bags in my 1205, Olympia, Electrolux Advantage and Aerus classic 90th anniversary edition, they work great, better than the bags Aerus provides, have not had any problems. If a suction relief control is designed well, it should not accidentally open. The only hose I have ever had this issue with is the Perfect hose which is why I taped it closed. The other hoses have not had any problems with this.

That makes me wonder about the Lux shut-off feature... I know they did patent it but it was in the 1950's when they did it. Patents in the U.S. last for 20 years or so. I wonder how they prevent others from copying it or designing similar features at this point? Are you able to "renew" patents? I know that many patents "run out" after a while (Viagra?).
