I am a new member and love the information and stories, thanks for posting them everyone. Here is a Penncrest model A117 that I recently acquired at an auction. Funny thing is I didn't pay for it! Yes, thats right it was free. After the auction I found myself with a 1976 BMW 2002 (very small for those who don't already know) and a large pile of items that wont even come close to fitting. I requested that they hold the items that didn't fit until tomorrow when I could drive over in my box truck and get the remianing stuff. They said sure, no problem. The next day I arrived and the shop owner volunteered to help me load up. While we were doing just that he said "hey why don't you take this old vacuum too, I can't sell it and I would hate to just throw it in the trash". Of course I said absolutly !!! IOnce I got home I did a quick safty check (make sure it wont catch fire or shock me) and I plugged it in. It ran well but the brushbar didn't turn and it had no headlight. I wiped it down, replaced the bulb, and the belt. It works! What a deal! Cost me about $5 total. Even the cord winder and catch work properly. Score! Now I can't stop looking for more. What have I done? This same thing happened to me one other time, right before I collected 200 tube radios.

LOL.. welcome to the world of vacuum collecting. My name is Tom and I hope you stick around and join in.

Nice find.

My advice is, if i might be so bold to offer it unasked for, is to take a cue from your current experience and keep your bar high. In other words let the finds come to you. Don't overly dilute your collection with good (but not great) vacs you actually are not that fond of and/or over paying for a vac you like that is in poor condition and require even more money to be spent on it. They multiply like bunnies otherwise and it makes it hard to really enjoy what you have.
I now have far too many vacs and spend more time dreaming of getting rid of many of them rather than appreciating what i already have and the thrill of the next one i might discover.

This pic shows vacs standing on the hood of my wagon which is itself packed to the brim with vacs. The area behind the wagon holds a dozen more as does the area near my work bench...and that's only the garage![this post was last edited: 7/9/2014-13:39]

Amazing find! I bet that Penncrest would sell for a huge amount on Ebay! Keep it because that model is very hard to find!

Thanks for all the words of encouragement ......

Thanks for all the words of encouragement and advice. I (having a past of collecting to extreams) have not received the go ahead to aquire more yet. LOL But I will keep trying. As for eBay, I have thought of that if I don't get the go ahead to collect more stuff without getting rid of some other stuff. But I don't think that will be anytime soon. Plus I just found a Kirby upright that needs some cosmetics but works, they want $15 for it. But I will be walking lightly if you know what I mean.

Oh I know what you mean, on all accounts. Funny thing for me is that now that I need nobody's nod to acquire, I don't acquire nearly as much and thin or eliminate collections as my interests shift. There are a few things - vacuums, hi-fi equipment and tools that have been longtime collections, but others have come and gone now that there is no pressure to get rid of something, it just happens organically.

Welcome to Vacuumland, Brian. What a way to begin your cleaner collection--a turquoise Penncrest (A117) with a cord winder, even. Enjoy! I also hope you'll contribute what you learn along the way in addition to seeking answers to your questions.

Lately, I've been on a shampooer/scrubber/polisher kick having used my Electrolux Model B-8 for the first time recently. So, I wonder if there was a Penncrest model? I don't know if vacuum cleaners and shamopoer/scrubber/polishers were (are) sold as sets in stores, but it seems to me that door-to-door salespersons sold them that way--especially to close deals that needed an extra nudge.

Another thing to consider is acquiring attachments and manuals for your cleaners.

Nice Find Brian!

I have one too, belonged to a family friend who passed away last year. Also got the attachments with it.
Jeff
