You may want to add the Eureka commercial canister model 1625 to your wish list (looks like the 1791 residential model is in the running as a close match to your Sanitaire; although I'm quite sure that its hp is 4.0 rather than 40!):

I was wondering the same about the brush roll and hoping Brian (@eurekaprince), Ben (@kirbyclassiciii) or someone else would know. The "twisted aluminum thing" is a helix-shaped Vibra-Groomer that Eureka used in the '70s and early '80s on most of its 2000/2200/2300 Series TOL uprights and its Brandywine TOL Roto-Matic power heads, and maybe a few in other colors that followed.

I have never seen a photo, let alone a VL post of the 1625, so someone like you should have it if for no other reason than to own such are rare Eureka model. Come to think of it, even though it's not rare (albeit uncommon), a 1791 would be a good addition to your collection, too. I have yet to see another 1700 Series ad touting it to be Eureka's Very Best and with a commercial brush roll.

Easy to work with. My E-lux D338 is just a 3 step process. Open, shake, put back in and close. I am counting putting the bag back and closing it as one step.

I have two Vactronic models with the "Quiet Kleen" exhaust that I think are the absolute high point of Eureka canister vacuums.. They are truly quiet, have good power and with minimal trimming will use an Electrolux OX synthetic HEPA dust bag. There is enough clearance under the lid to run one of those dome shaped pleated HEPA pre motor filters. I made an 8 foot hose for my Eurekas out of a Patriot hose by swapping the canister end spouts. I also put an upper wand with the direct connect cord control on the old Vibragroomer power nozzle. It isn't modern but it's nice to use and cleans well. It's one vintage vacuum I don't feel bad about using often.

You would love the expander cage I created for my trusty old 1982 Sears Best 4.1, the first Kenny you could turn on and off from the hose handle. Three position switch for off, vacuum on and vacuum plus power nozzle on. It also has a motor speed control on the back of the lid. My all time favorite vacuum. My only gripe with those big square Kennys was that they lost a lot of airflow as the bag filled. I was looking at the inside of some of my old 1980s Eureka canisters and noticed two things. There was a barrier between the bag and motor intake that keeps the bag away from the intake, and there is a grill on the underside of the lid that keeps the bag from touching the lid. Between these there is a path for air to flow as the bag fills and the Eurekas don't seem to loose airflow like the old Kennys do. I first tried to make something using the removable expander cage from a Panasonic MC-GC917 but it was too long for the bag chamber. I ended up making something using two expander cages from the Kenmore Elite canister. Cages top and bottom. The bag never touches the inside of the bag chamber. I have used it once this way and there was no noticeable loss in airflow ( the hissing noise from the floor nozzle didn't diminish as it always did before ) until the bag was so full it backed up into the hose ! Then the sound finally changed. It didn't even set the bag full light off. I can't upload the images I took with my cell phone camera so I need to take some more with my camera.
